Did John Hughey play on the recording of "15 Years Ago" by Conway Twitty. I think it was released in 1970.

Steve,Forgive me as I know this is off the topic but in the mid 80's I was at Opryland on vacation and as I walked around I saw a young man crouched down behind the Martin guitar stage putting a black Emmons guitar together to play.He had dark shoulder length hair.A few years later I was watching Ricky Scagg's show from the Ryman and He had Patty Loveless and Ralph Stanley on and you played steel that night. You were great by the way!You looked so much like that guy at Opryland.Did You ever play any shows there.I have always wondered.I am a big fan of yours and of the late John Huey.Niels I apolagize for interupting your thread but I hope Steve will see this and Reply.Thanks,Tim.

John produced a great CD called Pure E9th. It was available with a rhythm tracks CD and a tablature book. I have it at home and I would bet that Fifteen Years Ago is on it... Probably still available from Jeanne.

I don't want to hijack Niels'thread either...Tim,if you saw me at Oplyland it was a one-off with an artist...maybe John Conlee or Johnny Russell or somebody...I never was in one of the regular bands there...thanks for your kind words!

John Hughey was the nicest man you'd ever want to meet, and reached the highest level in what he chose to do in his life...I miss him every day.

NO ONE could play up top like John Hughey. Some steel players are probably considered "better" than John, but there's a reason why that place above the 15th fret is called Hugheyland. He will always reign as king there.

Not by me. Maybe almost as good.

I feel the same way. It's just that others get that nod far too often, and in some ways Hughey was the very best.

There's a very fine line that separates all the greats. Sitting here listening to Lloyd Green on Amber Digby's new CD reminds me just how great he is. But, John is just a tad in front of all the others for me, but not by much.

I think "better" means "whoever I am listening to at the moment". There are so many greats. I mentioned listening to Amber's new CD, there is of course, the great Dicky Overby on it too. He is awesome. And a name I have never seen mixed in with the likes of Hughey, Emmons, Green, etc is Jim Loessberg. His stuff on her CD is knocks me silly. He is truly an awesome player.

One of the things that I am really enjoying as I progress in my PSG knowledge and playing, is the appreciation of different artist. I have heard most all of the big names at one point or the other, and now I will hear them again and it is like hearing them for the first time.
The other great thing is being able to ask a question and receive a thoughtful answer from people who have the same passion as the "greats". Awesome, love it. Thanks Smile Smile Smile

The band Conway had at that time was really great. It seemed a team effort to produce some great music. Pork Chop on drums, Joe Lewis on Bass, Mr. Huey on Steel and Conway on Lead himself. The harmony of Conway and Joe was something special, That made it so great. I saw Conway in about 69 or 70 and what a show they put on. To bad an accident and time has taken them from us. RIP

Every Time I saw Conway, He had a lead guitar player. I assume it was Charlie Archer. But these records were recorded before I started seeing him live. Joe Lewis, in my opinion, was like Don Rich to Buck Owens, with those great high harmonies. It was a sad day when Joe passed away.
