Hi. The 1936 and 1937 National Hawaiian (new yorker) ele guitar had one blade pickup at the bridge and 2 conceled neck pickus. The 36 had 3 vol and 1 master vol and the 37 had master vol and the 3 way selector. What type of pickups were concealed in the neck? Any photos? Why did they go to the single pickup after that? Can anyone point me to any sound and or video's where one is being played? Why didn't the pickup's in the neck feedback?
Thanks

Here are some pics of a seven string I used to own. Pretty much everything I know about the pickups is in the captions on the pictures.

Hi Dennis, i have a 37 New Yorker with the 3 pickups each pickup consists of a coil for each set of three strings and they go thru a couple of caps , .047 for the bass strings .022 for the 3 treble strings.
There are a few clips on Youtube ,however the National in those videos sounds very bassy and unflattering,my National is very clean and clear the neck pickups sound very much like the inbetween Strat tones. They seem to be humcancelling as well.

Hope that helps,
Cheers

Cool! thanks for posting the photos.

I've been wondering about this also. Love to play one of these with the extra, covert pickups, or at least hear one in person. I have a late '40s New Yorker I really like, but of course only one pickup on it.

Kelvin's comment: my National is very clean and clear the neck pickups sound very much like the inbetween Strat tones. They seem to be humcancelling as well. has me even more intrigued. [/quote]

Wondering if any of the National Grand Console D8s had the concealed neck pickups. Or do the Grand Console models all post-date that era?

The Grande Console was introduced around the same time as the New Yorker. The early ones did indeed have hidden pickups, but, as with the New Yorkers, these are extremely rare compared to the post-War models.

Thanks for the info. Wasn't finding so much on the console models. I'm guessing the ones with the big square pickups/plexi pickup covers are late '40s/'50s, yes?

Thanks, Michael. Haven't seen one of those pre-war console models in a long time.

Reminds me of one I passed up years ago at the 1st Daddy's Junky in Boston - at the time $299 (or there about) seemed a lot of cash for an old lapsteel. Sad

Hi,

You probably have all the info you need already, but in this thread there are plenty of pics of hidden pickups in different New Yorkers too:

I guess that is a matter of taste - I personally love the dark, deep, bass-rich and acoustic-like tone of the hidden pickups in the two New Yorkers with such pickups that I have played. The sound is not for everything, that is for sure, but I think it is a really cool and atmospheric sound in its own right.

Cheers,

Fred

Hi Dennis,

Do you mean the youtube video in that thread? I might have pulled it from my public videos. Let me know if that is what you meant and I could make it public for a while again if you like. Smile

If you mean the facebook link in my signature, I'm not sure if you can access the music on there if not on facebook.

Cheers,

Fred

Hi Fred
Nice playing. I like the dark tone of the guitar. It has a good feel to it.
Were you useing all three pickups?

There is a pre-war double 8 up on ebay right now, for a few more hours. I have no affiliation with this auction, just thought the pictures would be a good thing to look at. It is not perfect, but is being offered as a 'project' guitar.
