Many of you have expressed your facination and admiration of Hank Williams Sr...... long-time steel guitarist.......DON HELMS.
During Hanks' earliest recording years, the studio exec's declined to have DON HELMS play on Hanks' recording sessions....and he remained for many years as the obscure road/stage player.
In Don's place, was JERRY BYRD who at the time was on the "A" list in Nashville and elsewhere, along with Tommy Jackson, fiddler, and Louis Innis, vocals and rhythm and Zeke Turner, lead guitar. They were known as the String Dusters and also the Pleasant Valley Boys.
If you'd care to visit Jerry's Music page on the
www.JerryByrd-FanClub.com/ site....
you can listen to Jerry's exceptionally fine styling on Hank Williams record of "Mansion on the Hill".
Then get back to us here in this posting and let us know what you think about it. Okay |

I'd love to, but I can't find it on either the "Jerry's Music" page or on the "Music (listen)" page. |

Hank Williams used Jerry Byrd because Don Helms was still in the army and had worked together before Don got drafted. Hank was waiting for Don to get out of the army and Don did go to work on the opry with Hank right after he got out. Just thought you might be intersted in how it really was. Have no idea how those stories get started. Hanks fiddle player Jerry Rivers tells about it in his book from Life to Legend.
I was still very young and got to meet and see Hank in Wichita Falls,Tx. In late 49 or early 50's.
Met Hank in a music store and he signed and gave me a picture. Saw him again but don't recall the year but remember Hank said he had a new song coming out
called Cold Cold Heart and hoped every one liked it because if not he was going to go hungry the next month.lol
Unfortunally i never got to meet Jerry Byrd. Tracy |

The songs, Mansion on the Hill and China Night, are now live on the Jerry's music page, Home page, and the Music (listen) page.

Found it! The first time I looked through the "Jerry's Jukebox" playlist I didn't see Mansion on the Hill.
I've been through the site a few times over the years and still have trouble from time to time finding the music I'm looking for. And not to get too off track, but I think the best part of the site is the "About Ray" section. No offense to Jerry's legacy, but Ray's is pretty dang impressive. |
