Fender Princeton 65 combo amp. Very clean and recently gone over by a local amp tech. It weighs 29.5 on my bathroom scale with the cover. Two channels and reverb. 65 watts with a "special" Fender 12" speaker. This is not the earlier tube type with the 10" speaker. It is solid state. Sounds great with a guitar. Possibly for steel, depending on your taste and needs. $150.00 plus actual shipping. I'll pack it for UPS or FedEx.

Hi Jim
What do you think this amp would do for non-pedal steel? I like a 'clean" tone that pushes the tubes a little. I'm having a hard time finding the happy medium between brittle clean/loud as all get out and good bar-gig volume/a little too distorted. I know that my 20 watt sounds great at volumes just slightly less than I need and a 100 watt Twin that I tried out felt like my ears were going to bleed before I got even a touch of the right fuzzy-on-the-edges vintage tone. A Bassman seems to sound just about perfect, but I'm not about to drag a 4x10 cabinet around.
Maybe this little combo is in the right range for me.
Any info appreciated.
Thanks
J A

John, I have a feeling most lap steels would have pickups similar to most six string guitar pickups and the output would be similar. But, to be honest, I don't know. This amp sounds real good with my Fender Strat and my DeAngelico hollow body. But, what sounds good to me is a clean, somewhat mellow tone. I tend to use the neck pickup on guitar to get that sound. I like the thwang of a Tele too, but it doesn't match my playing. As Forest Gump says, "life is like a box of chocolates".

Well, it's true that non-pedal steel clean tone is often different from guitar clean tone, but if you're managing good, loud clean volume with neck pick up, it'll probably give reasonable volume with my steel playing. As I say, I can get close to the right volume with my 20 watter at just the edge of breaking up, so if thing stays clean up to around 4 on the clean channel, I'll bet it's plenty loud for most gigs - maybe short of a full dance hall.
If you don't mind, please send me an email or message with your phone so we can talk a little.
Thanks
J A

I use this amp for steel on small gigs. I just turn the bass on 10 and its fine. Sounds like a small steel amp. Perfectly clean. Its got a dirty channel on it also. Opened for David Lee Murphy and his guitar player played it through the mains. It sounded fabulous. Very versatile small amp.

Kevin, I tried it with my Mullen today and it sounds reasonably good, discounting my playing. I set the bass on 10 and the treble at 3, with the mids at 5. Also had a DD3 connected. It could work for a small venue or if miked. It doesn't break up even with low bass notes on C6.

Hey just throw in some burr brown chips and a B/W 1201-8 and presto a real Steel King Jr.

Mine is actually a Frontman 65 now but they are the same amp same power. 65 watts...36 lbs with B/W speaker.
I have built and sold 2 of these and have not had a complaint yet.Has a really great distortion also.
The only bad part is the reverb sucks. You have to use another source for that.

David, sounds like a good idea for a lightweight Steel King Jr. I use a NV112 and love it, but if I don't sell this amp, I may try your project.
I saw two Black Widow 12-8's last week here on the Forum. I think they sold.

yes and if you mic it it won't matter how much power it has. Mine sound loud enough without a mic with exception to my Steel King and my Evans rack unit 400 watts rms with 2 12" B/W's in NV 112 E cabs.....

O.K. things are slow. I'll drop it to $225.00, plus actual shipping. It's a nice amp, expecially for guitar.
