I have a design for my own lap steel drawn up and was thinking about using some local wood. We live in the world's largest Elm grove so that is the first wood I thought of.

Thoughts?

Elm can be stable and nice looking, but, depending on species it could be a little heavy. Last elm I worked was many years ago, but I remember it being pretty hard and dense. My guess is that it would give you a tone that's pretty edgy with plenty of sustain.
