Help somebody...... Was getting ready to play this Sunday morning, and all of a sudden there was a growll and a pop from the amp and it quit........ The light comes on and you can hear it pop on from the speaker, but no sound from the steel. The reverb pack doesn't make noise when jared either. Our lead guitar guy pluged his guitar into it with his cord and still nothing. I don't know much about solid state stuff,and have never had to work on this amp. Don't know if a fuse blew or what????? Can any one help with some info. Can't really afford a new amp. Thanks....... Jack<><

I could be a fuse, but if so that means it blew for a reason. Pull the fuse and it will be obvious if it's burned out. You can try another and maybe that will fix it. Make sure and don't use a higher amp fuse than what is called for, because that could cause something more expensive to fry. Sounds like you'll have to get in for repair. It may not be a big problem.

Thanks Dave and Larry......... Dave.. do you know where there is anybody or shops in the Seattle or Bellevue area, in case its more then a fuse and I have to have it worked on??? I'm in North Bend.

Make sure the wire to the speaker didn't come loose. Could be a cold solder joint. Bang on the top of it with your bar or pick real hard a couple times with your volume pedal all the way down and see if it comes on.

Get some contact cleaner that is safe for plastic and spray in all the jacks and plug a cord into them several times to clean the contacts on the jacks. I've done this with mine a couple times and it took care of the problem. It's worth a shot and if a fuse was blowed it would not power on

| I don't know if those amp have the molex connectors but my Vegas was intermittent in losing the sound,found out the connector was loose.I had no way to fix it so I soldered the speaker wires directly to the posts on the chassis,cured the problem.Peavey might have the molex connectors,shoot Mike Brown an email,might be worth a shot if that's the problem. |

The speaker wires soldered to the old Molex connector pins on the chassis was a change Peavey made on later model 400's.
But, since there is still a pop and the power light comes on, it suggests the fuse is OK, the speaker connections are OK and probably the power amp section.
It could be one of the "normal through" jack connections. Use a guitar cord and jumper the front panel effects loop from the output to the input and see if that fixes it. If it does, the extra connection in the input jack is the problem. Same way jumper the Preamp Out to the Power Amp In as there is a "normal through" connection on the Power Amp In jack. If either of these fixes the problem, cleaning the contacts in the problem jack will take care of it. |

That reminds me of Bart Moore in Tx.,his sessions 500 kept losing it & he used his bar to get it running,course you couldn't see any of the settings on the front panel,he had em' beat so bad ya couldn't read em'.  |

Thanks guys for all the help. Knew I could count on you for info. One thing I forgot to mention was, that we were going to do a song that I was going to play on the lower neck.... While switching from the E9 to the C6 acouple of times... Thats when it happend. I also found that the plug in on the end plate of the shobud was lose, which I tightend. So will bring the amp and steel home from church and start looking. If all else fails I will take it in to have fixed. Once again thank you for all your help.......... Jack<><
