I usually pass on ol' Perry, but fortunately kept it on after Twilight Zone last nite and noticed it was an episode filmed on Oahu which quickly used some great Waikiki steel as background music. Not sure of the tune, but later the real combo was shown and Bernie Kaai Lewis was on steel, with Mel Peterson on guitar, they played it different every time the tune was heard. Not sure of the title or who else was playing in the group, but this was not your typical TV baloney and they actually tried to be authentic throughout, good old '60s! Fortunately, we had the recorder on so I can cop the licks if not the whole tune which I hope to ID eventually. And it was a good show, anybody else see this one? |

Twilight Zone and Perry Mason? Jees Ron, you're hardcore. Did Della Street wear a lei? Anyway, I'll be looking out for that episode. Have you seen Hell's Half Acre (1954) with Wendll Corey? It has some very imaginative steel guitar in the soundtrack, and it is partly shot in Honolulu. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Hey, Ron, you've got a great eye & ear! I saw the program, too, & I've seen it more than a couple of times in the past. This is one of the surprising moments from Hollywood about using authentic Hawaiian steel guitar music, AND, as you say, authentic cultural references. I usually laugh at Hollywood's attempts to cover Hawaiian music with a Lawrence Welky type orchestra! |

Thanx for the compliment, Butch, coming from someone that know's his schtick like you means a lot. I was impressed with the producer's attempts to keep it real, but had to laff when they used the public bathroom at Makapuu as a beach pad! I think it's still there |
