How is the setup different between lap steels depending on how it is meant to be tuned?
All I have now are an old six string Morrell and an acoustic Weissenborn style. It never occurred to me that each one may have been made to be tuned in something different that C6, which is my favorite tuning.
What is the difference?
Thanks

You are free to tune it anyway you like, as long as you use string gauges that are appropriate. (I use the heaviest gauges posible without breaking) I feel it gives me more volume and the notes are more stable.
You should be careful however that the string tension does not exceed the guitars design limitations.
I tune everything to some form of A6.

James: You might find a visit to the Guitar Page on the Jerry Byrd Fan Club site to be both enlightening and beneficial.
There are litterally hundreds of TUNING VARIATIONS.
I've never heard of any tuning restrictions for any guitar unless perhaps a pedal model of one kind or another.
I use Spanish guitar strings and they give me a great sound IMHO. |

Hi Ray,
Do you get these from a special source? I am not familiar with Spanish guitar strings? What makes them unique?

James, I'll second the remarks of Dom and Ray. You also might want to check out Cindy Cashdollar's website. If you are not familiar with her music, she plays a variety of acoustic and electric instruments in a variety of tunings. All is explained there:

I am familiar with all of the tunings as well as those web sites. So far C6 has delivered everything I need.
Somewhere I got the impression that certain lap steels were being manufactured to play best in one tuning or another. I was just trying to determine there is any truth to that notion. |

By "Spanish" guitar strings, I believe he means strings for a standard guitar. You'll occasionally see standard guitars referred to as Spanish guitars to distinguish them from Hawaiian guitars (designed for lap style playing). _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel
