Bobby Ingano will be coming along with George Kahumoko's group to play in the SF Bay Area this weekend. Although the show is sold out, you may be able to find tickets on Craigslist or other sources.

I'm really looking forward to this....

Wishing I could just haul my butt to the other side of Oahu to catch him!
I havn't seen him on stage for a while, but I just let him know to keep an eye open for you, James. I'm sure that'll be a cool evening for all involved.

I thought I'd post my short review of the show last night. Of course it was hosted by GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR and was arranged as a sort of mini "review"...George and others are just coming off heightened interest from their music being used in "The Descendants" (as he said, he got a $20k check for dinkin' around on his guitar).

Anyway, the 300 or so seat venue was sold out and there were brisk CD sales and interest last night 3/11 at Villa Montalvo (an upscale arts estate in Monta Sereno).

I was there to see Bobby Ingano and got to meet him thanks to Ron Whitfield. I'll be frank in my views, so please don't be offended if you don't share them (they are just mine)...I felt Bobby was the star of the Show although George was a great host...the next surprising guy was Uncle Richard Ho’opi’i...he was a very vital guy for his age and played a mean Ukelele. These guys held the stage for the 1st half of the show. Then came Dennis Kamakahi and his student Steven Inglis (also having just done an album with Dennis). I'd say that they were good for awhile, but Dennis is long winded and Steven Inglis while a very accomplished guitarist, seemed out of place. His approach to the guitar was very formal (he even played with a guitarist's foot raiser even though he was standing up)...he came off as way too Haole to play with the rest of these guys...anyway, at the end, they all came back on stage for the last couple of numbers. All in all, it was a very good show..only wish it would have had more Lap Steel, but for a general audience (especially coming off of the Descendants) it was about right.

Anyway, if you get a chance to catch this show it's well worth it despite my criticisms...

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that in addition to the last post, Bobby was playing a 1930s 7-string Frypan!!! He told me a friend had gotten it and wanted a 6 string so sold it to him for $700!!!! He's definately livin' right...he also mentioned that he needed to keep his day job in the Fish Market in Oahu as the steel guitar sadly doesn't pay the bills (of course we all know that)...anyway, if they were smart at the Fish Market, they'd have him playing over there to bring in more customers...I know I'd go Smile

Very Happy

Beside knowing you dig Bobby's music, you, he, and I, love the Rick 'shoe' PUs, and I felt obligated to fit likeminded pieces together. Too bad there was no time for you guys to share quality time, I know he'd be all over your shoe-equipped quiver. If you two joined your Ricky/esque steels together in a pic it'd be stunning.

About Bobby being the star last nite, that's typical, no matter who or how many are on the bill. He never fails to bring the house down. Beside's intriguing guitar loving audiences with a steel guitar, his playing style, tone, taste, and personal appeal always steals the show. Only Led Kaapana can match him, and if they share a stage, it's non-stop fun. Yet, Bobby will tell you he's more famous for working at Tamashiro Market than for playing steel! And the disparity between George's Decendants check and Bobby's tells why he has to work to pay the bills. Like they say, life ain't fair.

Thanx for sharing, James.

I first met Bobby, Jeff AH and Derrick M. at an HSGA convention in Joilet. Wonderful folks !!

I also had the pleasure of having Bobby and Doug Smith at my home for an evening. They sang and played in my basement ... rehearsing for their appearance at Elkins College in West Virginia the next day.

Even before the babies were awake ... I heard beautiful steel coming from downstairs ... And went down to find Bobby in front of my twin ... Playing one of my frypans.

Little Ellie's eyes tell the tale ... that's Doug playing Legos ... and my furnaces next to Bobby.

I also spent some more time with him in Dayton, OH ... With Doug and Barb ... a couple of years later.

He's a special guy ... And I'll always cherish those meetings ...Mr. Green

Not true according to Bobby. Just had lunch with him today and he said George only made $2,000 for the use of his song in the movie.

Yet still x times what Bobby made per song. And I know who I'd rather hear.

Not only am I a lover of the steel guitar, I am a lover of Hawaiian music in general.

Stephen Inglis was raised in the Palolo Valley on O'ahu. His nickname is Palolosteve as a matter of fact. He uses the foot riser even when standing up so that the guitar is held away from his body... to increase the resonance of the instrument.

@Derrick, this is just what George was saying at the show...don't know the reality of it although it wouldn't be unusual to get a $10k or $20k licensing fee for a major release like "The Descendants" for original music that was used in the film....maybe what Bobby is saying is there were many others that got cut into the fee.

@Norman, regarding Steven Inglis, thanks for the edification, I'm sure you are accurate. However, I'm just sayin' that in giving my impression of the concert, Steven seemed out of place. He also had a very annoying habit of tuning constantly so that was very distracting and no doubt had his reasons for the foot raiser but I'm just sayin'...very Haole thing to do. Anyway, he was a pretty good guitar player so probably sounded good on the album they did.

Probably so. Unfortunately, Bobby has a bookfull of horror stories committed against him by even the biggest in local music that would make anyone sick. Yet he takes it all in stride, soldiers on, and is a true inspiration.

@Martin,

Maybe I didn't put that in the right context...George wasn't exactly bragging so much as he was just kidding around onstage...maybe making light of "The Descendants" using his riffing around when he has all this legacy that he most likely made little or nothing on...

Anyway, it wasn't meant to be serious.

Aloha James, not to extend the discussion on Stephen Inglis's Haoleness past where it needs to go, but I thought you might enjoy a couple of concert videos that I took of Steve. Filmed and posted with his permission.
Both are original songs written by Steve.

Honestly, I have to agree with you. Steve, because of the way he looks, definitely does not conjure up an image of Ray Kane or Gabby Pahinui, or just about any other Hawaiian musician that readily comes to mind, but his heart and soul is Hawaiian and so is his music. To be totally embraced by Dennis Kamakahi, in particular, demonstrates how other Hawaiian musicians view Stephen. As for his constant tuning, if you go to one of Steve's concerts, you will soon be exposed to one of his favorite sayings that he attributes to Jimi Hendrix,"We tune because we care". Slack key guitar players, in general, tend to spend a lot of time tuning. Hope you enjoy the videos.

I heard Dennis and Stephen play a couple months ago here on Kauai at a slack key concert. He impressed the hell out of me. Should hear his Bob Dylan 'Like a Rolling Stone' playing in slack key. Kamakahi will tell the history of the song because he either wrote the song or spoken the the person who did.. A big difference from some of the other performers who orated alot about what the music is suppose to be. Last years concert Greg Sardinha made a impromtu session with Mike Kaawa and company..Slack key and steel....chicken skin. Never judge a book by its cover.

Martin here is Steve doing another Dylan song with your Kauai neighbor Cindy Combs and Phil Watts. Sorry to have hijacked this thread, but I am really a big fan of Stephen Inglis. He has a whole CD devoted to Dylan songs called "Slackin' On Dylan".
