It looks like this old pedal player is going to get an old T-8 Stringmaster. I intend to use it on stage and incorporate it into my playing, both pedal and non-pedal.

I want to tune it to what was most commonly used in the 50's & 60's. Yes, I know there are and were many tunings used back then. Assuming that one was C6th what would the other two most likely have been?

Thanks

Having lived through that era, (now aged 84), I can inform you the E13th was, and still is a favoured tuning.
HI to LO: E C# B G# E F# D E .

I think your first choice is... do you do a bass neck or not? You don't have the guitar in front of you, but you'll find that the outer neck has deeper nut grooves and larger holes in the tuners for bass strings. I'm seriously considering setting mine up for bass... it could get expensive, what with bass strings costing arm+leg and two sets needed.

Assuming you do one C6, one bass (C6?), you have one left for your 'personal' tuning. I think most folks end up with a modified C6 for their 'home' tuning... I've got a pretty crazy one myself (BbDEGACEG).

Or if you forego the bass neck you have another neck to set up for special songs (change tuning during break). For instance, a Dom7 really helps Caravan jump out, tune that 3rd string up to C#.(edit: wrong, it's 4th string , for ACEG(A#)CEG)

You could do worse than to cop Buddy Merril's tunings off the Poly-Grip hour...

...just watch this five hundred times, or hopefully one of the big guns around here will chime in with the information. I, myself, am also very interested in the result of your quest, but I have only watched this 370 times.

Stephen,

Wow, that's a nice video of Buddy Merrill.

On a triple, I would have the E13 mentioned above, a C6 and a B11 neck. Good for all sorts of music.

My T-8 Fender uses:

A 6th h-l G E C# A F# E C# A

E 13th h-l E C# B G# E/F# D/C# B E ( I tune E or F#, and also D or C# depending on songs)

C 6th h-l E C A G E C A E/F (E or F tuned depending on songs)

Thanx,
Jim
