Greetings; The Deep South Steel Guitar Assoc will sponsor a really big show on June 4th. Saturday. VFW Post 4526, Dedeaux Rd. Our shows are getting much more interest every time the first Saturday of every other month rolls around. We are planning a nice memorial for Jerry Byrd. With the Supreme Steel Guitar Host, Dewitt Scott, gracing our building and stage this program will me monumental in all aspects. John Hughey will be on stage to show his appreciation for Jerry also-as we all will during the performance of over 17 steel guitarist from near and far. (I have asked the Mayor of Gulfport to extend the hours in this Saturday so we can get to appreciate all the support from everyone). Jeff Blackwell will be our professional MC and he will have his TV Documentary crew here as they are producing a documentary on the history of the steel guitar. Interviews will be conducted all afternoon for this program. Scotty with his "frypan" will be an excellent starting point for this documentary. I will publish the list of players in the next few days. I respectfully ask that all players who have expressed the desire to be on the program to contact me again as my computer has crashed and I just want to ensure that we do our best to make everyone happy with out program.
I am proud to announce that we will again have Billy Bolster from Nashville as one of our musicians (drums) here with us. And a special guest on piano by the name of Larry Hicks from Birmingham, Al. will keep us all straight on the band stand. Larry will have his Tonemark Co. products on display also. (If any of you were at the Dallas show, you heard those great Tonemark cabinets they let me use on my portion of the program). The low note chord structure I like to use have never sounded clearer and better. More info on the scheduled players later. Thanks..

Bill.....what a show this is gonna be....two great legends on the stage as well as some of the finest players in the Deep South all there to support this great club. I hope my good friend Bill Stafford will also do his tremendous tribute to the late great Jerry Byrd as well.....Folks, we should never underestimate the greatness of my good friend Bill Stafford.....he's not known as Mr. Smooth for nothing. He's as great ( in my estimation) as Mr. Byrd. I'm so looking forward to this great day of steel guitar. I'm booked for the Fri. nite before RJ....so you'll have to get by without me at Lakeside F.C.......but with all the great ones you'll have there, you won't even know that I'm not (LOL) See ya on the 4th of June.....HAL

June 4th is almost here...and I can't wait!
Bill, you and Ben O'Dell have done all the work putting together such a dynamic show.
Yes, we'll have a camera crew to document this steel gathering. As you know, the process of putting together a documentary is time consuming. We already have a few interviews in the can, but the DSSGA show will give us a terrific stepping stone to getting more accomplished. Between working a regular job and pursuing my passion for the steel guitar and its origin, it may take some time, but at least we have a goal!
Hal, I can't wait to see and hear you.
I don't personally know all of the players on the schedule, so let me ask a favor for those of you who don't know me.
I would love to get a bio and some information so that I can properly introduce you. Just send me an e-mail.
We also want to interview as many players as possible for the record because Mike Scott of steelradio.com has indicated he would love to use our interviews.
Plus, we're bringing a bunch of stuff to give away as door prizes....yep, Ben....I've already got your shirt size!
It's all about promoting the steel guitar and Gulfport's a great place to hear it!
pee ess - if you haven't done so, please check out the STEEL GUITAR SHOW CALENDAR. Let me know of any show, any size, anywhere and I'll help you promote it.

AH the pleasure of having such a hard working, dedicated, determined, guy like Bill Stafford in your corner. He sure knows how to make it HAPPEN !!!!!
Been tied up between trips to Jackson, Ms, to the VA hospital with little brother Joe. Making that trip once a week as Joe is there for the next 8 weeks for radiation.
Thanks everyone for your support !!! And I mean that from the heart! We are really looking forward to a great show on June 4th.
I was with my Big Buddy, (John Hughey) in Magee last weekend. What a tremendous PLAYER, and just happens to be one of the finest individuals on the planet. Course, he owes all that personality stuff to Ms. Jean and her rolling pin.
It will be great to hear Billy Carr again as usual. Billy really pulled out the stops at the Magee show. Sure hope he leaves them that way for our show. "MAN" !!!! The way he was playing up there, he aught to pull them stops out and bend them over so they can't go back.
Brother Hal also lit up the room in Magee. Boy,,,,,,,, Did he ever. Course we all know Hal is always a highlight of the day when he is with us in Gulfport. Can't say enough about this one.
I'll be chasing this post and jumping in here between trips. One of you folks give me a ring at home if you get wind that Bill Stafford has booked Buddy Emmons. He's alltime sliddin that good stuff in there.
Meantime,,,,, R.J, keep that catfish ready for the crowd Friday nite.

Bill, I am trying to work it out to be there. We have a family vacation scheduled to begin on the 4th. Maybe if I give the wife all the money I can come over, then drive to the Panhandle. Hope to see you there! BTW, I have a new rig for my steel. Sounds GREAT! Two 15's and a rack (similar to yours). Hopefully, I'll get to bring it down and let you check these out. "Tonemark Cubes". Smaller, lighter and really kick! If I miss this, Larry is going to really rub it in! Also, Larry will do a great job on Keyboards. He's been working up some cool stuff with you in mind. I won't spoil the suprise...I'll let Larry share if he wants. Your friend, Tim. |

All this interest is so good to see-and humilaiting to me. Thanks guys. I am going to see the Mayor of Gulfport and have him enlarge the city limits to fit you all in. Hal, your are so kind with your words about Jerry Byrd. He was, and will always be, the very best that has ever played our steel guitar. We will dedicate our whole program to and for Jerry.
Just heard through the grape vine that the great Bobby Bowman will do his best to be here also. (Wonder if the Gulfport Mayor can add more days to this coming weekend on June 4th?)
Tim, I am so proud you and Larry will be here. Anxious to play through your new cabinets from your Tonemark Co. Do you want a slot on the program? Tell Larry I have a few suprises for him also. Really looking forward to this with Larry Hicks in our band. I have his CD and it is awesome folks-great singer and similar talents on the piano. If only Roy Rosetta could be here we could have stereo pianos-on each side of the band stand. Better yet, put them both up front where they belong. Thanks to everyone for all the support of DSSGA in Gulfport, Ms.
And the Friday Night Frolic at R.J.'s restaurant on the lake near Picayune and Kiln, Ms will be a good time and lots of great food too.
I will publish the schedule later so all can see the major interest we now have during our show.

Bill, it's looking as though we're going to make most of the show. Hopefully, this will be confirmed over the weekend. Arrive on Friday afternoon and depart sometime on Saturday; early afternoon. If this works out, I would love a spot. I'm very grateful for the invite and just to be able to fellowship with some great folks.
Looks like an outstanding event. I would truely hate to miss it. |

Bill,
We will definitely be there Friday night and a while on Saturday. Please don't obligated to fit me in the schedule. Let me know what you might have open and if works out, great; if not, great. Either way, we're coming to the show. We just need to leave early enough to check-in in Destin, Saturday afternoon. My wife and two of my kids will be coming. When they heard "catfish", it was an easy sell. |

Hi Tim, after you visit the beaches here you just will not need to go to Destin...lol
Will let you know the schedule of players later next week. Thanks for being here too..Really enjoyed our visit in Dallas and thanks again for allowing me to use your company's new speaker cabinets. My bass chords have never sounded better-clean all the way through the spectrum with individual clarity on all the notes in the chords. Anxious to use them again. (Hint, hint).

Hey,,,,,, I told ya'll, I'd be a sneakin and out of here to check on the goin's on's !!!
Got home from that flying trip Friday afternoon and just as I got in the door, my phone was ringing off the hook. It was a sad call indeed. My "DEAR FRIEND, DUSTY HARRELL" is not doing well at all in Springhill Memorial Hospital, in Mobile. The call was from the family to let me know that the doctors were about to put, "DUSTY" on life support. I jumped back in my ole truck and took off back to Mobile, where I stayed till 12:30 Friday night. Believe you me,,,, I prayed and squalled all the way home.
For whom ever reads this post, (reply) PLEASE SAY A SPECIAL PRAYER FOR "DUSTY".
THE SHOW IS LOOKING GOOD !!! And Larry Moore, you ain't said that right, it's "A GOOD-UN". Got that??? And please don't wear so many trinkets, bangles, and beads (provided by the Jewerly Lady). No one could see you for the glare while you were on stage last time. We really need to talk about that. Oh yeah,,, don't worry about Barney being in front of you at the catfish house, as much as Hal and Bill.
Ya'll be sure, (like Bill said) to contact Jeff with the boi info. That boy can remember everything so just hit the high spots and don't let the cat out of the bag. He ain't gonna forget it.
I sure hope Barney is able to make it with his new "GITTAR". It's always to see Barney and Mary. Great Picker !!!
I'll jump back in here and rattle everyone's cages as soon as I can.
