I'm in the process of upgrading to a new pedal steel. I would also like to "upgrade" my bar. I'm at a loss as to what kind to buy. I'm looking for suggestions from the forum. Size? (I have fairly small hands), round? Different shapes? (like Shubb). Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks,RG

The closest we've ever come to a "standard" is a round, bullet-nose bar measuring 7/8" x 3 3/8". Resist any temptation to go bigger unless your playing is very advanced, or your hands are very large.

The standard 7/8" bar is the best thing to use. It's what I use for 80% of what I play. I have a Shubb Pearse shaped bar because I can pick it up easier for some faster songs. I also have the Big 1 incher (15/16") for slow songs because I can control my vibrato a little better with it. But if I could only have one, it would be the 7/8".

Try to visit only the bars that are clean and not pig styes. Laughing

Seriously though, Donny has it pretty much nailed. I use a standard BJS bar. I have tried the larger bars, lighter bars, dobro style bars, but always come back to the standard bar. I prefer the BJS over the Dunlop and Ernie Ball bars.

I use a hollowed out Dunlop 7/8" x 3 3/4" when I want a mellow tone and and a BJS 15/16" x 3 3/4" solid when I want a bit more sustain and a little clearer tone.

Rich, I invite you to visit my website www.bjsbars.com. I agree with the others regarding size. The 7/8 bar is by far the most popular. You can find my contact info on the site as well. Feel free to call if you would like to talk more about BJS. Butch Gardner
