Can anyone figure out what those tentacles are for? They look like vacuum cleaner parts. I've always been puzzled by this photo.

I wonder what the audience thought when they first saw the talk box? Maybe they thought the steel player was recharging himself!

It makes me wonder if Santo's talking steel was any good. I assume somebody here has heard it.

I have to admit that I find those Pete Drake tracks a bit creepy.

ciao,

Yes, I agree that the "talking" steel guitar rig is probably the best explanation. It's just that I never heard any recordings of this nature from Santo. The reason for two such "tubes" escapes me, and the whole affair looks ponderous.

Too bad we don't have access to Santo Farina...he played with a lot of feeling and a vocalist approach to expression of notes. I'm sure we'd all have questions galore.

Michael, I have that album and I can't say I hear any "talking" steel guitar or other effect that would result from this contraption.

I think that you are right in that he probably used it sparingly in some Italian recording(s) during their years in Italy, no doubt as a novelty sound.

That Pete Drake song is a classic. so simple, yet extremely catchy!

IMO, the steel is very adept to the talk box because of the vocal nature of the instrument itself.

I guess that answers the question;

Was he a "Smart Feller"?

Or a "Fart Smeller"?
