Hello Steel Guitar Forum,

Brand new member here (Nick A Reed from GA), but I've been reading some posts and learning a lot.

I've been playing guitar for years and actually owned a Carter Starter for a bit, but I'm looking for a solid Steel to start spending a lot of time with.

I would like something geared more towards the modern country sound, or a least something that would fit into that area, but mainly I'm just ready to start diving into the instrument.

Any ideas or suggestions or something you're selling please let me know.

Thanks!

Best,
Nick A Reed

When I had been playing for about a year, I wanted to upgrade from the Carter Starter. I felt really lucky to come across a used BMI S10 for sale by someone I knew. BMI's are great quality instruments that came highly recommended by my pedal steel teacher, and they cost less than a lot of similar-quality steels. Going from a Carter Starter to the BMI was like a whole new world.

I'm hoping to upgrade soon and I will probably sell mine at some point, but for right now I use it for shows, recording, practicing, everything, and it plays and sounds great.

I have a MCI Range Expander with 3 pedals and 4 knee levers, Emmons setup, that I'm about to put up for sale. It has a double raise/double lower all pull changer.

There are a lot of players that like the Stage One. Apparently a very good quality pedal steel for the money, somewhere around $1000 new.

I'm sure there will be more replies recommending the Stage One.

Lots of good used steels on here too as you already see.

You're gonna get a ton of differing recommendations on this one.

Make sure you get 3 pedals and at least 4 knee levers no matter what you get.

I'm lookin' for that perfect PSG to learn on. I've heard nothing but good things about ZUM - except you can't find any for sale!

I want a single neck, intermediate to pro quality (I don't want to buy a "beginner" then have to upgrade) that sounds a cool as it looks! I'm a little confused by "push pull"... can someone explain that to me and is it something I really want or something I really want to avoid?

I've got a little change in my pocket but I'm not loaded. Any input or advice would be welcomed!

Thanks in advance guys!

Kevin

I'm pretty new to pedal steel myself and got lucky and found what I think is a fantastic guitar.... It's an MSA Universal 12. I've heard lots of others and this one has a sound that appeals to me a lot plus it's built to last....
Besides that Reece and the folks at MSA are great with support.
I've been playing standard guitar for over 40 years and I think I know a good guitar when I play one. I'd be looking for an MSA especially now that I've seen how well it can perform with the right person sitting at it. good luck with your decision!
