I'll be playing with my swing band, Beats Walkin', this coming Saturday eve, May 21, at The Mermaid Inn, 7673 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia (Chestnut Hill), PA. Our guest for the evening will be jazz guitarist, Jim Dragoni, who studied for many years with Dennis Sandole (you jazz cats know what I'm talkin' about here...) I'm looking forward to locking horns with him on Sat. Hope a few of you can come by and enjoy the fireworks. We start at 9:30pm. Cover is $5. |

I'll let my Uncle Jack know. He lives about 1/2 mile away from the Mermaid Inn. He once told me he's a Jazz Cat (but I'm hoping his bedtime is not before 9:30 PM).
Editited to add link to the Mermaid Inn webpage. Forget about Jim, check out the Mermaid. http://www.themermaidinn.net/ [This message was edited by Colm Chomicky on 18 May 2005 at 10:33 AM.] |

Howard, thank you for those very sweet lies.
And Colm, you really need to see a professional about this "Uncle Jack" problem of yours. He is a figment of your very fertile imagination, Colm. Please, I beseech you, get professional help before this goes too far. |

Hi Jim, I am in college presently in California, I am a 4.0 studentin Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Honors program...of interest, all the REALLY smart people in my music theory class like your music(I just study hard),which says plenty considering some of my classmates are at genius level, which is another plane of existence for this ex farmer/rancher from hickville. Thought that might make you feel better about your musical ambitions. I like your playing and singing, and wish I could hear your great band live.I will be transfering to Rochester in June, mayby I will catch you another time(no,I am not going to the Eastman school of music, like I said, I am no genius).Your Awesome man! |

Thanks, Douglas, for proving my hypothesis: that Really Smart people would like my music! LOL! This probably has something to do with the English fellow who heard my set at the Irish Steel Guitar Association show and complimented me (I think) on my "pedantic" bebop playing. (Does that mean I play by the rules? or in a manner that would instruct others how to do it? Gee, I dunno... Maybe it wasn't such a compliment after all...)
Well, never mind, I'm sure glad you and your friends like my stuff.
Best,
Jimbeaux |

Hey Jim,
I'm not able to see your band this time, but I hope you have a great gig with Beats Walkin, and that you get out our way sometime in the near future. I sure enjoyed hearing you in Cambridge a couple years ago.
Any new CDs in the pipeline?

Let us know how it went last night. Mermaid Inn looks like a nice place from their website.
Funny what you said about Uncle Jack...'cept he is real. He is retired and does some traveling so unfortunately may not have been in town for your recent gigs. I'm sure he would enjoy Beats Walkin', and besides he is a music lover. He's mentioned he plays trumpet with a group and maybe some playing in bars from time to time. I'll send you an order for the Beats Walkin CD, fer my Uncle Jack. |

Ah, we had a big, fun time at the Mermaid last night. Forumite David Doggett showed up for the last set and sat in on tenor sax and kicked it up another notch. Jim Dragoni was super on guitar and we all had a blast at the House of Blue Lights. "Uncle Jack" would have enjoyed himself. |

Yeah it was fun. I only got there for the last part of the last set, because during the Koko Taylor and Shamekia Copeland concert in Glenside, my car got towed. For the record, when we did Yardbird Suite, Jim played way more bebop sax lines on C6 than I can on sax. It's a real challenge for me to play with Jim's great group. I'm not really a jazz saxer, more a rude rockabilly and blues saxer. I'm thinkin' Jim really needs a fiddle. |

Thanks, David. What a bummer about your car, man! Yikes! Glad you could still make it out to the gig, a wiser, if poorer, man for the experience.
As for fiddles, we used to have a fiddler. The first and second incarnation of BW had fiddles, but it was too hard to find good fiddlers around these parts who aren't weird. Oh there are some excellent players, mind you, but let's just say we never found the "right fit". So now we usually carry a tenor sax instead, which tilts us even more toward the jazz end of the spectrum, which is fine with me too.
Having said that, if you do know of a good swing fiddler who you think would fit in well with us, please do let me know!
And thanks again for coming to sit in with us; it was a heckuva good time! |

Oh yeah. Every band needs a steel guitar and a sax. But Jim is right about fiddlers around here. Philadelphia is full of violinists, but there are few fiddlers, and even fewer swing fiddlers. But Philly is a jazz sax capitol - Coltrane, Grover Washington, Rhasan Roland Kirk, Sun Ra, and on and on. You can go to Ortleib's jazz club here and watch one after another sax player in their '70s or '80s get up and blow the roof off. |
