Anyone know how I could find out anything from the serial number on what I am told is a 1953 Fender Champ lap steel. I use it for a wall decoration.

There is no absolute chronological list and there are sometimes exceptions but Fender models usually have their own series of numbers. As I remember off-hand Champions were introduced in 1949 and turned into Champs in 1955. I believe I have seen serials into the 6000s in '55. I have what I remember to be a '53 with a serial of 3892. If I dig around I am sure I have examples documented that can break it down some but that's the jist of it.

A note- The serial numbers on Champs is not a continuation of the Champion series. They had their own.

Hey Niels, send me the Champ. I'll send you back a picture frame about the same size. You can put a picture in it and hang it on the wall. Meanwhile, I'll play the Fender . . . Which might enjoy visiting with its 400 and Tele cousins already living here. You can PM me for my mailing address. Thanks.

I would Michael but the 1964 Sunburst Fender 1000 I just had restored would miss it. Smile

Don't forget the thred under Pedal Steel, "Fender Steel Guitars" certainly includes Non Pedalers;

Pictures, history, stories are welcome. Several of lus PSG guys/gals began their exercises in frustration on non pedals myself included. My first endeavor with PSG occurred when Sammy Lewis 'offloaded' a double neck Stringmaster (very muchly modified) on me in the early '50's.

That's a CBS label... is the case black? You're looking at late '60s/'70s. The pots have the date codes on them for sure.

Brown case, early 60's. Tweed before that.
