Topic: Antique Gibson pedal steel? |

A friend of mine says he has a line on a Gibson D-8 with 8 pedals and, of course, no knees for $500.
By his own admission, he "can barely fix a sandwich", so I told him this was probably not the guitar for him as it sounds like the kind of axe you'd spend more time under than behind.
What are they, what are they worth and are they worth revival?

The only thing that comes to mind is an "electra-harp". With my past experience with that beast, I'd tell him to run in the opposite direction as fast as he can!  |

If it's actually a D-8 , it may be an EH-820

The old console Gibson was more akin to an acoustic guitar with pedals. The body was quite large but rather thin, and the mechanics were rather clunky. In fine shape, it would likely bring around a grand, but moreso as a collector's piece than a real "player instrument". It was a bulky-looking instrument that reeked of 1940's design, but it was very expensive for it's time, and just never caught on. Gibson probably made a few dozen in the early '60s, and then gave up when they were vastly outsold by Fender's Model 1000.
Baltimore's big Gibson outlet, Fred Walker's Music Store, tried in vain to get someone (including me) to buy the one they had, but it sat for several years on the showroom floor with very few showing interest in it. By the mid '60s, when the "big Gib" was phased out even Fender was fading away, being replaced by what was, at thet time "the big three" of pedal steel - Sho~Bud, Emmons, and ZB. |

This will be the EH-820 as stated above.
I just bought one for $395.00 that the dealer said was sitting unsold for ages.
They're terribly unpopular, but for $500.00 I can't imagine he'd be displeased.
Gotta love the math...
