I'm fixing to modify a Fender Blues Jr. by putting the chassis in a custom cab 1x12" & 1x10"... Since the normal configuration of the Blues Jr. Is an 8 ohm chassis and an 8 ohm 12" speaker, will I have any problems simply adding an 8 ohm 10" speaker to the mix (now running the amp at 4 ohms)? I'm also retuning the amp and replacing the 9" reverb tank with a 17" 2 spring tank.

If you NOW run 4, DON'T add an 8 to the mix. That'd take you down to 2.667 Ohms (that's (8*4)/(8+4)).
If it's meant for 8, ummmm, don't.

Bob,

I made a post a while back about modifying a Fender Blues Junior. I play non-pedal steel and guitar and realy like this amp. The mods I posted about made a huge difference and I would encourage you to check them out. As far as running two 8 ohm speakers at a 4 ohm load you would be better off to change the stock output transformer. The stock OT can handle the lower impedence but it will be a workout and may eventually fail.

Bill M Audio and Allen Amplification make a switchable OT that is be perfect. It is made to fit in place of the orginal and is a huge sonic improvement over the stock transformer.

Coincidentally I thought about making the same speaker changes as you but opted instead for an extension cabinet. I wasn't totally happy with the reverb in my FBJ either but after making the basic Bill M mods to my FBJ the reverb sounded a lot better. He also has a replacement reverb control pot that gives a more gradual control over the reverb which is a big help. Good Luck.

Gary
