I've made only a few posts on the Forum and when I do it's always been seeking help, so this type is a first, but I feel so stongly I felt I had to put it out there.
Until recently, while browsing the Forum, I didn't realize how many steel players were as influenced as I was at Lloyd Green's performance on the Charlie Pride Live at Panther Hall album. I also didn't realized how fortunate I am to own an original copy of the record, bought by my Mom and Dad back in the early '70's; nor could they have realized the impact it would have on me.
While it has been over 40 years, it's gratifying to have found a comparable recording for the next generation, as well as this one, of steel players to be influenced by: Amber Digby Live at Swiss Alps (probably not a coincidence that it was another Texas venue recording). Dicky Overby's performance is simply incredible. Whether covering old Loretta Lynn songs or doing Digby orginals, this execution is flawless -- at least to my ear -- and the ultimate in taste and style. I got the album off iTunes and there isn't a bad song on it, and it's a good thing it's digital or I certainly would have worn a needle through the vinyl by now? I can't stop listening to it, just like the Panther Hall record, which is almost wore out. Dicky Overby is an outstanding player, pure and simple.
If I were to have one wish, it would be to buy both Mr. Green and Mr. Overby a beer and chat in some corner of a Texas honky tonk (I'm thinking in Bandera?). If I am so fortunate as to have either of them read this, thank you for all you've done for the steel community through these recordings. _________________ Mullen G2; Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb; Goodrich L-120 |

Justin is getting a little gray in the temples.I remember the old Eisenhaur Flea Market days when we used to go there & jam, good times. There were a lot of other times too but those are the most memorable. That's where I met & jammed with Johnny Bush. |

I consider myself extremely fortunate, in that I live within 30 miles of Dicky Overby snd a few others like him, and get to see and talk to them often. I always tell them I'm there to attend college on that particular gig! Really has helped me observing different techniques of the "pros". But I still can't play "sock-footed" like Dicky does! _________________ Rains D-10 by Gary Carpenter |
