Debated whether to post in non-pedal or not but since that's what I have its as good a place as any to start. I have a Rogue 6 string lap steel on legs, a used Peavey Bandit 65 and a ErnieBall JR volume pedal. I spend way too many hours trying to play along with streaming music and want to move up to a S-10 eventually. I want it to sound like a steel guitar but something is missing and I don't know if its the steel, the amp or my lack of experience. I seem to have to stand on my head, drueling, twisting the bar across the four strings I just picked with my three fingers to copy the sound I just heard in a Don Williams song (Some Broken Hearts). So my question would be to get those big chords just right with just the right amount of disonance, is it mainly in the tuning? The picking? or the equipment? |

Take a look at Lloyd Greens Sho-Bud SD-10 3x4 using his E-9th Tuning, along with a Peavey Session 400 ....this will give you some idea how to make a Start, Equipment wise, towards playing like Lloyd. Plan on many years of practice. Lloyd Green cut most all of Don Williams hits.
Hope this will be of help.

Hi Matt, Sorry, Wrong Insterment. Lap Steel does not sound like a Pedal Steel. Many of us have tried but a Lap Steel has it's Unique sound and the Pedal Steel has it's Unique sound. You will have to go back to the 40's and 50's to get the Lap Steel back up, Hank Snow Ernest Tubb, Eddy Arnald, Ect Ect. After the introduction of the Pedal Steel every thing changed. Pedalsteel has a sound that can only be produced by a Pedal Steel. 10 strings, tuned to E9th on a Pedal Steel is the only way your going to get it. An S10 3/4 is the way to go to get started. You can find fine quality insterments right here on the Forum, go to Insterments for Sale section. Welcome to the Best Steel Guitar information center in the World.

Matt, I noticed over of Steel Guitars For Sale, here on the Forum a really nice MSA 3/p 1/k for sale for $650.00. If I had the cash I'd take it. I have owned MSA and it is a fine insterment. The price is more than right. There is nothing in it for me, but thought you might take a look, since your question mentioned a possible pedal steel. By the way what Roger sead, but the rewards are worth the practice. Remember only a Pedal Steel sounds like a Pedal Steel.

Matt, until you get a pedal rig. Check out Billy Robinson he uses a a lot of techniques on the non pedal that will almost give you that "sound" that you are looking for.

You will eventually have to get a pedal rig though. |

.....or make up your mind to live with the limitations of a non pedal guitar. Many people do choose to do that. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |
