Wait times on new pedal steel guitar?

Just curious here - not flaming or intending to do so.
I have a friend of mine (who is actually a dealer for said guitar company) who ordered a new D10 back in July 2010. It is a pretty standard D10 - 8 & 6.
He called manufacture this week and they told him "ya, we have the wood now... " This would make me think that they havent started assembly at all.
Is this normal?
How long is standard wait times for new guitars today? Anyone care to comment?

Don, it took me about 4 months to get a new Mullen G2, and very much worth the wait, which by the way, I felt was a very reasonable delivery time. Larry

I've seen people post times of 3 months to a couple of years. Depends on the builder's backlog.

this is an interesting topic, again...

It doesn't take 1 year to build a Steel Guitar or even 6 months if all the parts are in front of the builder, but in a one man operation it could take 6 months to start building the next Steel Guitar. Even at that, they can't start building anything without parts.

We have read that we want a "quality built " Instrument and that's why it takes so long...

I believe the biggest issue on the "wait" is machine shop parts...if they are ordered in small quantities then the long wait is inevitable. If they are ordered when a "Steel" is ordered then the wait is even longer.

I can't imagine that any of us are thinking that one builder is sitting in front of ONE Steel guitar on the workbench building it for 1 year !

Bruce, working on his own, makes a guitar a week, or thereabouts. But if you order from him, you'll have somewhere between 50 and 90 in front of you.
Generally a builder should be able to give an estimated completion date when you order

I just yesterday asked the folks at Emmons Guitar for a shipment quote and expected wait time for a new Lashley LeGrande for a customer of mine. I was told delivery would be in approx. 4 - 5 months. This is about the same wait time for the last one I sold to a very happy customer in Spokane, Washington about a year ago. It's important for customers to know that the Emmons factory puts a higher priority on orders (guitars and parts) placed through their Dealer network. It seems to me they would rather concentrate on building guitars and parts and getting them out the door than having to spend time on the phone. Emmons Guitar is actually a very small company, with Ron Lashley Jr. doing most of the guitar building work himself. Machining of necks, end plates and key heads are now done outside, with Ron himself doing most of the rest in house. Ron's wife Rebecca and her mom Bobbie also greatly contribute their efforts. Believe it or not, Rebecca is the one that builds their cases! I've also placed many parts orders for both myself and customers over the years and have been very pleased with their turn around time in most all cases. They do get a little behind once in a while, but they have always come through for me!

Lynn, if that's true that they place orders from dealers first in line (wrong in my opinion), then they should require all new guitar sales to go through a dealer. It's not fair to the people that order direct. I agree that the small builders (pretty much all buiders) would be better served if they let a dealer handle the sales and allowed them to build instead of talk on the phone.

I believe that Emmons Guitar does suggest to customers that inquire about guitar purchases to go through a Dealer. My customer in Spokane actually called Emmons first, but was then referred to me. Ron and Rebecca have both told me that they would prefer their Dealers handle their sales, not them.
