A great time was had by all! Thanks to Mike for putting together a wonderful afternoon. I counted 18 steels there - way more than last year.

Follow this link to some of the more esoteric photos of the jam. There's more to come. And John & Silvio will be posting theirs, too...

I want to thank everybody who came and made the event the success it was. Especially Jim Baron who supplied the computerized rhythm tracks and PA.

It was wonderful to hear players like J.D. Maness and Al Vescovo and Rick Schmidt and Billy Easton (who drove out from Arizona) tear it up.

One player who surprised me was Mark Switzer. I knew he was good, but I never realized he was THAT good. Mark really impressed everybody.

As for me, I don't know whether I'm inspired to practice more or give up.

Yes Mike! Thanks so much for throwing that cool little bash!

For a guy who's never been to any of the big steel shows, this was as close as it gets for me.
I was really impressed by everyones playing, and there were some beautiful steels there to oogle. So nice to meet so many forumites too. All in all it was the fellowship that really made this special. I don't think the venue's plumbing could handle all of us steelers though.

I'm thinking of writing my first country hit..."18 steels and a dozen aspirin"

Once again Mike P. has put on one of the highlights of the year for all us West Coast pickers. I always enjoy myself at "Perl-Jam" and this year was no different. Great to hear Al Viscovo playing all those big chords on his Excel, Billy Easton had his Zum "singin" real nice too. Billy Woo's new Zum S-12 was really impressive, just wish it was a little bit taller so I could have gotten my knees under it to play her! Mr. Twang's new Mullen D-12 was really great sounding too, that is when he put down the camera long enough to pick on it! (John, you should see the bruse on my cheek where you hit me with that chair! just kidding!) So thanks to Mike P. for hosting, Jim B. for the BIAB tracks (loved your new Fessy by the way) And last, but not least, sitting next to Jay Dee is always fun and I hope everyone who attended had just half as much fun as I did, cause that would still be more that the law would allow!

This was probably the best "Perl-Jam that I can remember and seeing all my old friends and missing some but making some new ones like Billy Easton, Mark Switzer..imagine being sandwiched betwixt these two monster players sorta made me feel like my good buddy Jimmy Eaton over there with "you know who" sittin next to him..still Jim, you sounded great nonetheless..the song chart screen was very helpful to all and song selection was just fine for a beautiful day in Highland Park also thanks to John Mclung for encouragement and big thanks to the Pearl-Meister himself Mike Perlowin..a very good day in LA..Oh thanks to my pal Stannie for the beer too!

Hi jammers,
I agree it was a great event, bigger and better and funner. Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Mike! I appreciated everyone's playing, and was particularly proud of my former students who acquitted themselves quite well, I thought.

TWO OF OUR FRIENDS DESERVE A HUGE "THANK YOU": John Hensch schlepped a truckful of AV gear, including PA, a video camera, and 42-inch plasma screen. Silvio Bello loaned us an Epson projector (and loaned me a fab Canon 10D digital SLR to document the event). Thanks to these wonderful guys, we were able to try an experiment, projecting the BIAB charts on the wall, intended to help anyone not familiar with a song.

I had several positive comments about this feature, and would love to hear more from attendees. I already know the room was a bit too bright and the Epson image was washed out; we'll consider using screens to fix that next time, and maybe 2 of them, so all players can see the charts.

It was great playing with you all, and great to meet some new pickers.

Billy Easton, thanks for driving in all the way from AZ! You played great, and your lovely wife is a real peach.

I'll try to have the pix I shot up online in a few days, just be patient!

Thanks to all the California guys!! I had a great time. The picking was terrific, and I got to see many old friends, and made some new ones as well. You made my sweetheart and I feel right at home, and I thank each of you for that. Great to be there, and I hope I can attend again. Thanks to Mike for making the event happen, thanks to Al Vescovo and his wife for their wonderful hospitality and to all my steel buddies. It was great.

Thanks Mike, the jam was a real blast!!! I had a great time hearing so many good Steel Guitar players. It was a real kick sitting next to Rick Schmidt and swapping fours. It was a real treat to be there. Thanks to Billy and Meriul Easton for comming over from Arizona. We had a good time together. Jay Dee was as good as always. Thanks to Jim Barron for making the trip from Northern California and all the great steelers that participated. I'll be glad when it happens again. John McClung plays that camera almost as good as he plays his steel, which is excellent. Thanks again, Al

Here's a link to my pictures from the steel jam this past Sunday. Special thanks to Silvio Bello for loaning me the cool Canon 10D digital SLR camera and other goodies, it was great to shoot with and the pix are excellent.

Pix from the jams of 2003 and 2004 are also at the same site.

I'm a little vague on just a few names, please email, tell me your name and the pic number you're in, I'll rename all files properly when I get some time. Rick's student, the guy between Jim Ives and Bill Easton, and the tall Sierra player next to Paul and his lefty LDG, please write me! Everyone else I know. Sorry 'bout that.

Hey there Mr. Twang

Great job with the pics, they are all so very sharp and clear unlike the few that I took with my digital camera. Thanks for sharing with all of us also thanks to Mike, Big Jim, John, Silvio and all the others that helped with the production also Kudos to all the steel players that attended, "You had to be there to feel the Love of the Steel"...

Do click Paul Papanek's photo link, first post in this thread, he shot some incredibly artistic detail crops of the day, beautiful images. You're impressive, Paul! You shoot with a Nikon D70?

My batch includes a few tight closeups of hands, you can really see how varied right hand blocking is.

Rick that's not a forehead anymore, I think we both have moved on to a five-head! Great hearing you pick.

John, thanks for the kind words. Yes - a Nikon D70. Great camera! I had as much fun shooting as everyone had playing. What an opportunity to have been able to take photos of so many great players, too! And - thanks to all those who let me "intrude" so closely while they were playing.

Terrific pictures, John. You totally captured the spirit of the day. You should have played a bit more, though...

On another note - I just want to say what an incredble community this is. There were players there of all levels, and all of the beginners (myself included) were made to feel comfortable and part of the festivities. There was no shortage of encouragement. No judgement was made as to anyone's level of ability - except for Al's, who just blew everyone's mind. I'm now totally rethinking how I sit behind my steel...! So - thanks to eveyone for making us all feel a part of the family.

Craig, you're one of my forgotten names, you're the tall dark handsome moustachioed man that sat next to Paul on the lefty LDG, correct?

John, the fellow with the lefty LDG is named Don. The fellow with the Sierra 14 stringer is Phil Cannon, who lives in Monrovia and plays guitar and 4 string banjo.

Mike - The fellow with the lefty LDG is me - Paul. There were alot of people there and if you're like me, names sometimes go in one ear and out the other. And - I'm pretty sure that no one else there would want to claim ownership of a left-handed steel anyway. (my insurance that no one else can play it...ha...) And yes, John, Craig was to my right playing the real purty Sierra D10.

Oh - and Jim - if you go to my page of pictures from the jam, you'll see a photo of Mike. He's the one with the blue thumb pick and red finger picks...

The speed picker in another picture is none other than John McClung (blue thumb pick and silver finger picks flying over the strings!). Man, can he move...!

Jim Cohen, Mike Perlowin is in my rogue's gallery, IMG_4298, almost at the bottom of the page. You probably didn't recognize him cause he's regained his svelt, girlish figure, and I really applaud Mike's doing the gym/diet/cycling regimen. It's not easy being consistent, but Mr. P is doing it!

I now have my missing names, thanks everyone, look for properly named photos in the near future.

And Paul is pulling your leg, my hand was perfectly still, like it always is, he used a motion blur filter in Photoshop.

I've lost about 70 pounds so far. I'm still too fat, but now I'm merely chubby (and cute ) instead of obese.
