Sorta sounds like George DeFretes style. Or maybe some other Indonesian player.

Very nice version of that tune, for sure......

Hi Ron W.
As you can see I've had no positive feedback yet, but did you like the playing? I'm quite impressed, although I'm not a lap player.

OK guys!
Shall I put you out of your misery?

I recorded this tune last Sunday.

The song is called Royal Hawaiian Hula.
It is a song recorded by George de Fretes as well as Rudy Wairata about 50 years ago.
There are many other versions as well from way before that time.

As it is a vocal song, with little guitar, I had to add a bit of my own stuff.
Notice that in one verse I tried to add the Hawaiian "yodel-like" sound that Hawaiian singers used.
Another interesting point is that the song verses are 10 bars, not 8 bars as expected.
That really foxed me, because I could not always play out (or complete) the typical hawaiian "vamps" in certain parts.

The guitar I used is a Harbor Lite 8-string (wooden frypan) with 2 Vintage Vibe Stringmaster pickups.
It is Harry Sheppard's prototype and I managed to buy it from him about year ago. Great guitar! Pics here.
I recorded with the bridge pickup with a small amount of the neck pickup added.
I recorded it straight from the PODxt into Sonar X1. The backing was done in BIAB which was edited in Sonar.

The guitar was originally tuned to standard A6, but the song did not lay nicely on it.
I wanted to use a lot of open strings, to get a certain type of resonance from the guitar.
So I tuned the A's up a half step, making it a F#7, I think.
The original songs were probably also recorded in F# to accomodate the singers.
I wanted the middle part a bit more "jazzed up" so the 7th tuning did also help a bit.
This middle part was recorded with a different setting on the PODxt.

Thanks everybody for the kind words! Much appreciated.

And thanks, Nic for putting it on the Forum.

Peter

Sorry for missing your reply, Nick. I must say, while I've never been a fan of the Dutch/Indonesian sound/tone/style, George, and now Peter are exceptions. And with a continued focus on the tech issues of cleaner pick/bar aps, ie the occassional audible kisses, Peter's playing and our listening future is real nice.
