Suffering an extended period of severe insomnia, I've been digging out the records of some of the music and steel guitar pickers that most influenced and inspired me to start playing steel guitar.
One of these is the this title cut from Pure Praire League's Two Lane Highway LP from around 1975.
Somewhere beginning at about 2:04 John David Call's steel solo kicks in up high at the C#m. The clarity and intonation on that part of the fretboard seems to always eluded me. Number of brands of guitars and several amplification systems. I'm aware of the studio enhancement capabilities but he had to have this under his hands.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it whether it's new to you or simply nostalgic.

Hi Jerry,
John's my inspiration, also, and we talk every now and then, so I asked him once if he had any control over the mix on his recordings. He said he only sets his own amp and the rest is up to the engineers. I said he really lucked out then, cuz his tone is pristine on everything he's recorded, in my opinion.
Do you have their Harmony Songs CD recorded live in Denver? The band is the same lineup as Two Lane, and though it gets a little rough in places (a couple of the boys got into some Jack that day), JD's like the energizer bunny on this one. I found a copy on e-bay and gave it to him cuz I wouldn't part with mine. You can probably still find one on there once in awhile. If you enjoy JD, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this one. The credits say Craig was on it but it was Reilly, actually. Lynn
P.S. He played his aluminum neck Sho-Bud Pro II a lot back then. Here he is with his new Carter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF1E2W0zM_k&list=FL7_hXa-BTrJ6T4R-SqdxXew&index=13&feature=plpp_video He said they only lug their guitars with them on the road now, and they've been pretty lucky with the amps the venues have been providing. |

Mee too!
Love that tone and reverb.
I like this one too.
Anyone got tab for that little descending run he does right after the line "Makes it just a little easier to live that way"? [start listening at about 2:30]... he repeats it a few times towards the end.

If any of you J.D. fans are in Chillicothe, Ohio, on a Tuesday night, you can see him with Loose Pockets at the Dock at Water. In the meantime, you can listen to some of their tunes here:

Thanks for the info and links guys.
Yeah, I just made the studio comment in passing. JD's tone and intonation are all him. It's just one of the things I struggle with up high on the neck and still frustrates me, so I'm in envious glee when I hear him do it.
That solo was one of those moments back then that gave me impetus to go for it and it's frustrating that I still struggle with it after all these years.
Yes Pete. Another shining example of what I'm talking about. [I have that LP too, BTW.] I think I can execute the mechanics of the run OK, but doing it that efficiently....well, that's another thing. I'll try it later on today. |

I do a BC pedal lick that sounds kinda like it...
'Always hoped someone would show me exactly how to play that run.
On of these years....

After a one note pickup, it lasts 2 bars (8 beats), plus one downbeat.
Pickup note is 3rd string no pedals, then:
Beats
1&2: strings 3,4,5- pedals AB down
3&4: pedals up, E lowered
5&6: no pedals
7: pedals AB
8: AB pedals and E lower
Downbeat: no pedals or levers
Sounds like that to me, tho I haven't tried it yet |

PS, the above post is for the 2nd of the two licks,, which starts on beat one. The first time it happens, it starts on 3, so steps 7&8 don't happen. The ending downbeat of that first lick is probably AF on the same strings. |
