I am putting these in a new thread, so as not to dilute the Frying Pan thread.

Two May-Bell Hawaiians.
There were recently two different May-Bell models with The Spanish neck up on ebay. The first one sold for something like $1100 (I had bid up to $700 but it jumped high at the end) and the second one, which appeared to be refinished, sold for $405 (I was outbid by five dollars). Did somebody here win either guitar?

A comparision of May-Bell and Slingerland Songster models. The May-Bell is unadorned with no routing. The pickup, which is seen on many Regal models, is screwed to the top. Basically a slab of wood. Meanwhile, the Songster is veneered with flamey maple on the top, back and sides, and the unique Slingerland pickup.

The Songster pickup, inside and out. The engraved hand rest is connected to the ground, but the strings are not.

Comparision of Songster models #400 (Hawaiian) and #401 (Spanish, unrestored at time of picture). Bodies are nearly identical but the #401 neck is longer, at 25" scale. Still, it just barely fits into the Hawaiian or May-Bell hardshell case.

More soon, Grins, Peter

Thanx for the pix!
These rare birds seem to be favorites of your's, Peter, what are their winning features? Do they have such great tone so to surpass most other steels? Ever seen an 8 string version?

I love the tone of the Slingerland pickups. Never seen an 8-string model and no mention of one in any of the catalogs I have seen, so I doubt any were made. I did see a Songster mandolin at a show once.

Thanks to Dave Kolars and The Slingerland Stringed Instrument Pages for the catalogue image. slingerlandguitar.com

I've always wanted one of these. I've owned several Slingerland acoustic guitars and a mandolin, and they're all superbly built with great tones.

Hi Michael, the Slingerland ad clippings, pictured above, arrived today. I guess the USPS should be commended for their fast service! They are slightly enlarged onscreen over the actual clipping size. The guitar pictured is a Nite Hawk, fancier headstock and fretboard inlays, and a bound pickguard. They also made some blonde archtop beauties with very nice flame maple veneer, and a neat all-wood variation on the headstock:

Hello again Michael, sorry I didn't return to this for several days and so missed your offer of the ukelele ad. Respectfully I am going to decline. Not that I don't like ukes, just not necessary for me to posess it. But thanks anyway!

Well... just got home and there was another letter in the mail from MLA, with the uke clipping inside. So now I feel just a wee bit foolish! Thanks Michael, I'll send you some stamps or something for your trouble.
Best, Peter
