Who played pedal steel on most of Tammy Wynette's hit tunes?

I don't know who it was, but the steel on her recording of "You and Me" is one of the best examples of both tasteful moderation, and string seperation I've heard.

I think Pete Drake played a lot on Tammy's records.

Pete Drake played on a bunch. Stand By Your Man, You're Good Girls Gonna Go Bad.
Lloyd Green played on D-I-V-O-R-C-E and I believe Lloyd was on Apartment #9

It was Pete Drake on Apt #9 by Tammy. Lloyd played on the Johnny Paycheck cut.

I'd venture a guess that Pete played on more of her songs than anyone else.

Mike,

Please be aware that Lloyd Green is the most knowledgeable person in Tennessee on the subject of steel guitar. I believe he is the most recorded steel guitarist in Tennessee.

Mikey probably knows. I don't, but sort of off topic, the Buddy Emmons instrumental of You and Me is great. I don't know if he did the recording with Tammy, but if not, he should have Exclamation All due respect to whoever.....

I agree. That's a pretty broad statement.

Chris,

You can't be serious! You have a right to form an opinion, as everyone does when accreditations are made by individuals. I think you would be better informed by doing a little more homework on the subject of who's who. Surprised

Kevin,

Case in point.. Lloyd's exclusive recording sessions as a studio musician. I believe exceeding all others on pedal steel guitar.

Pete Drake played on"Apartment#9"...I'd say Lloyd would be an authority on"who played what"in the time period referenced in this thread...his ability to recall that stuff is amazing!

Bill, true as that may be, we're talking about who played on Tammy Wynette's various recordings in particular, not who's who in Nashville. Let's try to keep from drifting into generalities about steel guitar knowledge, etc.

Barry,

Tammy in all probabilities is best known for her recording entitled D-I-V-O-R-C-E. Lloyd arranged those steel parts, using the E-F change for the first time in a recording. Johnny Paycheck made the best recording of Apartment #9. Not Tammy, or George or whomever. The band that Johnny was working with, featuring Jay Andrews on pedal steel, for my pleasure, was the best I've heard playing apartment #9. Those highs that only Johnny could reach, made the difference by comparison.

Bill, I disagree. I think "Stand By Your Man" was Tammy's signature song. It was her biggest seller, and also won a Grammy. Also, you are now drifting even further from the topic by bringing Paycheck into the thread.

Barry,

"STAND BY YOUR MAN" is a much better song as far as the melody is concerned. I play it as a featured instrumental. I'm not so sure about anything beyond that point.

didn't Sonny Curtis go with Tammy after the 'split'? Don't know who's on the records.

Fred, you are right, Sonny Curtis did go with Tammy when Her and George split. I don't know if Sonny played on any of the recordings or not.

Yikes, never too old to learn (so I hope). Thanks for the overwhelming response, didn't mean to cause such an uproar, and please to re-focus on Mike's original question.

I guess I stand corrected and my ears need a readjustment! (:

Here's a video - Jones Boys with Sonny Curtis playing an early ZB. Tammy just kills it. What a great band and vocalist...
