I was reflecting on 12 string guitars and remembered these pictures I shot for Elvin Erickson years ago. You might recognize the steeler ( I believe a forum member) for whom the guitar was custom made. I wonder where the guitar is now.

The last time I was at Blackie Taylor Music in Southern CA he had a used Erikson on the floor. Quite awhile ago though. I think it was a single 10 string. _________________ Dave Zirbel-

Yes , that is C.T. Allen. Been aat least 20 years since I've seen him. We both picked out in San Diego back then at a place called The Lakeside Hotel. Pretty wild place. He was a great picker. Taught me quite a bit. |

I've known Albert about 20 years and this is the first time I've see ol' "CT" with long hair.
I'm not sure who gave him that name but Les Swanson told me what the CT stood for a while back .

Hey Albert, is this true about "CT Allen" being your alias? If so, I met you on my first trip to the ST. Louis convention in 1978 when I was just a kid. |

C.T. stood for "cotton top" didn't it? |

I had forgotten that I took the picture of "CT" until I found the negatives. I did remember taking pics of the guitar. It was taken at Jacks Supper Club in Wilton, Minnesota, just outside of Bemidji sometime in the 70"s.
Elvin and his son handmade all the parts (not the legs) of his guitars in the early years, using a simple push pull finger changer. To my mind this era and possibly this guitar is the pinnacle of tone for Ericksons. I'd love to track it down.
Elvin died a few years ago, but his son still works on them for the few that are still around in Northern Minnesota.

Yes, that was me back in the mid to late 70s. Not really sure.
I was going by the stage name of C.T. Allen. My dad and mom
who were country musicians were going by the name of Rick and
Bebe Allen. When I started playing with them at the tender age
of 13, Albert Allen just did not sound good, and my nickname
which I hated at the time was "cottontop" because of my long
light blond hair. So I shortened it to C.T. And thus the stage name
I used for several years which included two or three shows at
Scott'y's Convention. As a matter of fact, most of my music friends
from Southern California still call me C.T. including Al Petty, who I
worked with for over a year in the L.A. area.
Concerning that black steel, it was the first 12 string Elvin Erickson
made at my request. It was an extended E9. I wish I still had it. It
stayed in tune very well and had a real raw gusty type tone which
was great for the rock bands I played with at the time. I sold it to
a student of mine in San Diego, CA who was a navy guy. Have no
idea where that guitar is today.

I remember BeBe Allen. Very good country lead guitarist. I also remember Elvin Erickson, and there are still a few of his steels floating around the North Woods. He also made palm pedals for Dan Lund and me, then quit that for fear of patent violation. |

Hey Albert, Dan still has the palm pedals on his guitar. He plays every Monday at Lee's Liquor Lounge with Joe Savage and a band called Buffaloaf. Hope you have fun in Florida. Call me when you get a chance.
