Everybody should get a copy of the Oct/Nov 2012
issue of REMINISCE magazine. Very nice article on WSM and the Grand Old Opry written by Billy Robonson.
Mentions Jerry Byrd, Jimmy Wiggins and several more of our old favorites from 50-60 years ago. Read it. I'm sure you will enjoy it. And Thank You, Billy, for writing it.

Does anyone know how to contact him? I had a question about the tuning he used on the two Yuotube videos, is it? -

He does a little string rake before "Caravan" that sounds like the above, I know he mentions the D, but I don't know the rest for dead-certain. Caravan is ridiculously cool with the hammer-ons, BTW:

I had the honor of meeting and visiting with him at the Super Jam this year. He is a super guy, a super picker and also an accomplished artist. In fact my wife has several of his christmas cards on our mantle now. |

Below is information that Billy gave to me in 2009 with regards to his Derby 10-string guitar:
Quote: |
My guitar has a 24" length scale and the body is a 12 string wide metal neck. Ten strings
are spaced out across a 12 string neck giving an even space between each string, approximately
3/8" apart. The pickup is a George L pickup made especially for me by George L so I don't know
if he made anymore like this or not.
One of the most important things about playing my non-pedal steel is the string diameters. You
can't pull a string if the diameter is too great, making the string too tight.
My tuning is as follows: From the top to the bottom low strings starting with D, G, E, C, A, G, E, C, A, F.
The diameter of the strings is as follows: D is a #17 diameter and the G is a # 12 diameter, the E is a
#15 diameter, the C is a # 16 diameter, the A is a # 18 diameter, the G is a #24 diameter wound , the
E is a #28 diameter wound, C is a #36 diameter wound, A is a #42 diameter wound, and F is a #50
diameter wound. I use a 12 string bar. |
I am sure that he would not mind me sharing this since he is happy to tell anyone that asks. |
