It sounds familiar to me too but nobody else popped up with that specific song on You Tube. That Roger Brown guy must be one of the best kept secrets in the music world. I would crawl thru broken glass to go see the guy live. |

Just a guess. But maybe it's because Buddy Emmons has played similar solo's for the last 40 years.
Don't get me wrong. Tommy is my all around favorite player at this time. And his delivery was great as usual. I love the solo. And it's commercial enough for public consumption.
Maybe the producer asked for a Buddy type C6th solo. Or maybe Tommy was just in a Buddy mood. Again, just my guess. |

I agree Bobby. Buddy has been doing this for years.
However, Tommy has such a unique touch and deliverance on everything he plays.
Buddy & Tommy have been my favorites as long as I can remember.
Both can outplay most with their eyes "wide shut".

A little bit of Buddy and a little bit of Maurice to my ears, but mainly Tommy White. He is his own man when it comes to improvisation.

I gotta totally agree with you guys.... The first time I heard it, I thought it was Emmons, but there was something different about the tone and attack like maybe Tommy White. Then I found the YouTube track and a fleeting glimpse of Tommy.

I found a listing of the credits for the Swing City Ep and it lists Tommy White on Steel Pan

Tommy's the man alright. I'm often dazzled and amazed at the things he does.
Swing City was huge with the line dance crowd a few years back, so if you played those places, you might have heard the DJ play it while you were taking a stage break.
Also played quite a bit on the line dance TV shows out of Nashville. |

Steel Pan is also called Steel Drum.

I'm guessing that in the original credits it just said Steel and the person that copied it thought it meant Steel Pan

Great video - thanks for posting! As mentioned, Tommy White (once again) knocks it out of the park!
The credits list Jonathan Yudkin as the fiddle player, but that looks like Hoot Hester is in the video. Both are great players, though.
My guess is that a "steel pan" is one of those things kept underneath a steel guitar that you "real" steel players use instead of getting up to go to the restroom.  |
