I can't for the life of me find any information on the tune "Wear A Lei" on the internet other than a beautiful performance of it on the SteelC6th web site. No info on lyrics, if any, or who, when, where regarding this wonderful B11th tune.

Any information would be appreciated. I'm really surprised that it's not even in my fairly good Hawaiian music collection of recordings.

Wish I could assist you Frank. I'm in a similar quandary as I am seeking the lyrics to: "WHEN I HEAR HAWAIIAN MUSIC" Dick McIntire recorded it and Jerry did it also. Anyone have the lyrics ?

Is this the song in question.

Wear A Lei, sung by Pua Almeida from the Waikiki Records LP, "On The Beach At Waikiki" LP # 316.

John Ely recorded a truly luscious version of this tune for one of Tom Morrell's "No Peddlers Allowed" tapes/cds.

As long as Franks topic was addressed, I thought I'd try to answer George's question. For educational purposes only of course.

When I hear Hawaiian music I think of you
The strains of sweet lelani make me blue
And when they stray across the sea
my eyes filled with tears
Memories of the past haunt me through the years

And whenever shadows fall Hawaii calls
To you sweethart aloha they seem to say
When they play a steel guitar
my thoughts of where you are
When I hear Hawaiian music I think of you

Norman, yes, thanks for the link. This is the tune I referred to. I can take the lyrics from the vocal, but I'm still amazed at the lack of information about such a nice tune.

Even the various ukulele song books now available include (fortunately) lots of very obscure or nearly forgotten (and very beautiful) Hawaiian tunes, but I haven't seen one that includes "Wear A Lei."

Anyway it's now become one of my favorites to play on my B11th neck.

I originally heard it by John Ely, then I heard Jerry Gleason's arrangement of it. NICE TUNE !

"Wear A Lei" was written by John K. Almeida, father of Pua Almeida.

Thanks for the info. And Mitch - Your nice version helped me to learn this tune. I really like the way the tune invites some improvisation and you do it justice in this regard.

I seem to remember a picture of Pua Almeida in the Carvin catalogs in the 1960's when they still made steel guitars.
