I'm surprised so few people here have anything to say about Doug's playing. I guess when Doug learns to play a little better people will notice. Keep practicing Doug! I think you have some potential.
Seriously, what on earth does it take to please people around here? This thread should be flooded with praise for Doug's accomplishments. Am I way off? |

I think Doug is the worst player I have ever heard.
Just kiddin' folks. Doug has always been one of my Favorite players. Very few have the soul that he plays with and I would be hard pressed to find anyone faster that you could hear EVERY distinct note, although many get close. I think the reason you don't see much about him is, he really doesn't have the presence that other famous players have (or had). But, he is certainly one of the best that ever sat down to a steel guitar.

C6th doesn't usually get high ratings,(Views) here or Youtube. No matter the player.
Most any tune played good or bad on E9 will get way more views. Just one of the cold hard facts of life. |

I'll never forget attending my first-ever steel guitar show after I emigrated to the USA. It was the Norwalk show in the late-'90s.
I watched a handful of players of varying degrees of accomplishment and was enjoying myself enormously.
Then Doug Jernigan played.
I was so overcome by his musicality, his level of control and his seemingly endless understanding of both tunings that, after his forty-plus minute set, I was unable to stay in the room and listen to anyone else. There's a limit to how much we can asimmilate when really listening to great musicianship and I needed to sit somewhere quiet and think it all over.
I was in the lobby when Doug himself came and sat down; 'unassuming' and 'self-effacing' are the words that came to mind as he patiently answered my questions. Watching him play made me aware of broader horizons than I'd ever envisaged for pedal steel guitar, and I left the venue convinced that I'd been listening to its greatest exponent.
I've heard nothing since that has changed my mind and I, too, wonder if Doug's quiet demeanour is one reason his accomplishments aren't more widely recognised.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of watching Doug, Tommy White, and Paul Franklin play a set together at the same time at The NTSA Jam.
It was quite a show. There was two guys watching one with the greatest of respect. Doug was not the one paying attention like the other two. ALL are monster players and just good guys.
It was quite a show. Doug is one of a kind.
