I'e had this guitar for a long time. I don't think I ever knew what model it is, if in fact has a model name:

Thanks

P.S. The red squares on the knobs just say T and V as the volume is the right one which is different from many other guitars. It was just to remind me when I sat down to play it, they were reversed.

Don't know of a model name, but there was one just like it in a music store here a few years ago. Almost bought it, because it had legs ! Smile

I think it's called a Comet, maybe. One of the experts on here could say for sure.

That's beautiful. Thank you kindly Michael Lee. Is that a particular book or an old catalogue??

Thanks again.

Hey Kevin, great pic. I can hear it now.

But, please don't laugh at me. I forgot that I had the Supro. I bought it probably 30 years ago, and it's been filed away in my music room here, I was thinking it was a six string, which I did have, but sold it about 20 years ago.

Rightly so, my wife has been pressureing me to downsize some of the stuff. I had to start as I recently bought a JB Frypan, and more recently a 1952 Ricky B6. Had I remembered that the Supro was an 8, I wouldn't have bought the Frypan, but anyway, it gave me the drive to get rid of some steels. I sold 4 steels this past week. So,I have less but better guitars. If the Supro doesn't sell, I'll just keep it for the time being.

At 74, I'm not playing out as much as I used to not that I need a dozen steels to play out. Getting home at 11:30 in the cold weather is taking it's toll on calling it fun!!!!

I've sold a super nice Washburn D29 which was one of two "house guitars", I only need one. Sold my autoharp, and a couple of parlour guits.

But, I dearly love the sound of the Supro 8.

Thanks for the message.

Geo

I bought that six-string from you, George, probably around 1992, when (do I remember correctly?) you lived in the Bathurst-St. Clair area. It was a great guitar which I kept for many years. Can't remember who bought it from me, but I'm pretty sure it was another Forum member.

I used to own 1475B,circa 60's, but had to sell it to finance a PSG. Had a great sound and feel. I've only seen one other like it. Forget who it was

Well Philip, I'm sure it's a nice guitar but probably coulda used its own topic?

Geo, glad you got the info you needed on the Supro - now, people of St. Catharines and the whole Niagara region - get yourself a nice steel from a fine gentleman!

It is Christmas time so I would give Philip the benefit of the doubt and assume that he was trying to start a new topic but his post ended up here for one reason or another. (I do hope that he does start his own thread and edit his post here- I don't think that you can delete the actual post but you can delete all of the content adding "oops!" if the software is looking for some kind of message.)

Back to the original topic... I have the six-string version of that Supro steel, which I believe was called the Jet Airliner. It plays easily and the sound is incredible -- full, clear and loud. And it looks cool, too.

Anyone know what kind of wood they used for these?

Thanks, Michael -- I have a '64 Airline. Appreciate you posting the scan.

Now the big question -- does anyone know what "NO-MAR" is made from, and how did they apply it to the tops of these steels?

Well I just bought a "Comet", as it turns out. Didn't know what it was called, but it called out to me from behind the counter in a pawn shop last Saturday. I wonder, why did Valco make so many different models?...Jerry

Great stuff! I've been playing a six string Airline for 8 years and was always under the impression it was a Comet. Glad to have the right info. Btw, many, like mine, were missing legs when I bought it. I finally found some Fender legs on Ebay and they were a great fit.

They have a sweet clean twang and lovely mellow tone at about half throttle - not unlike a Bakelite Ricky and a great blues stink full on.Most of the distortion comes right off the guitar from the pickup itself when the volume pot is wide open. It's all about the pickup. That's what David Lindley played on Mercury Blues BTW - a D-6 version of this guitar thru a Dumble amp.
Here's a nice example I bought from Greg Leisz years ago. I love the Art Deco lines.

I had a Console Eight a couple of years ago... a great guitar with a real "gutsy" sound.

Here's a quick video I made with my Supro demonstrating hammer-ons and pull-offs. To view the video click on the picture below:
