Mickey came to the North Texas Southern Oklahoma Steel Guitar Gathering in Ponder, Texas last Sunday and played Gene Watson's "Farewell Party" as well as I have ever heard anyone play it.
Having met him for the first time, he is a very nice guy and a very very good player.
Thank You for supporting the NTSO Steel Guitar Gathering. We appreciate you very much. |

Mark, I agree! I met Mickey Adams today for the first time, and it was kinda like we had already met, since Ive already seen most of his YouTube videos. While here in town as his aircraft is being maintained (apparently he does not also rebuild jet turbines himself, mostly just Mullen pedal steel guitars ), Mickey had some free time to stop over with his 12-string Mullen G2 in Ext E9 tuning, which he probably never flies without. As I got to take the limosine for a ride around the block, he made a few adjustments on my guitar. Within 5 minutes or less of my amateur rendition of Sleepwalk and random noodling, he had improved it from what already played really good to me, to even better, really great. Like a new one would be adjusted!
He spent some more time adjusting more things on the guitar, till only a complete disassemble/clean/lube/rebuild could possibly improve it any better! Within 20 minutes he tuned LKV with open and pedals down positions properly, and the half stops on both RKR string 2 (and now the string 1 raise on RKL too) are more solid and spot-on in tune. Lever and pedal travel is quick with minimal slack. Not only did he explain what he was adjusting (the pedal stops in particular), but how & why to do it. This was a tremendous lesson in itself.
Then we sat down and played some music, while I tried to figure out what he was playing. He'd stop and show different techniques just like in his vids on You Tube. The real deal. Thanks Mickey for the help and inspiration, you rock! Now all I got to do is learn how to play.

Mickey did a great job on that song. It was the first time I got to meet him as well. I thought his tone sounded very good and he was just down to earth and eager to help with any repairs on guitars. What a great asset to the steel guitar community Mickey is. |
