I posted this over in "Steel without pedals" too, but I know not everyone reads that, so sorry for the duplicate post.
In keeping with the recent bebop lap steel offerings here, I worked up a version of "'Round Midnight" on my lap steel. I guess it doesn't have much to do bebop chops, but it's sort of an anthem for that era of music.
This song always gives me a melancholy feeling, very different from Monk's later music that has a more playful, whimsical vibe. It's a dark, moody piece, (though I tried not to make it a dirge), and it seems to suit the sound of the steel guitar.
I used my homemade 8-string lap steel for this one. It's the same C13 tuning that I use for Hawaiian music, but this is a very different feel. No harmonic accompaniment, just upright bass and steel.
Round Midnight

Beautiful, Jerry - soulful, lyrical, tasteful, and your improvisations glide so easily over the form. I think Monk would have really liked this. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net

Thank you all so much!
Doing a song like this on a lap steel really makes me think differently about the harmonic structure of the song, and the way I would approach playing over the changes. It's more of a struggle than if I were doing it on a pedal steel, but in a way, it can be freeing, too. With the harmony distilled to the essence, I use my ear more, and that makes me play with more feeling... at least, that's the way it should work...
Thanks again. Words of encouragement from such players as yourselves means a great deal. |
