I saw a play on Saturday in Cincinnati at the Playhouse in the Park - Always...Patsy Cline. It was terrific - a couple hours of good music and singing of Patsy Cline music. The steel player was also excellent - a guy named Russ Wever. I didn't get to talk to him afterwards, but I would have loved to. He played a blue Zumsteel - I think 9x6. Does anyone know Russ Wever? He doesn't gig here in Cinti to my knowledge, but i'd love to hear him play in a club. This play is nearing the end of it's run. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in good country music and steel playing. |

Like everyone says, Russ is the kindest most sincere person that a person could ever be. Not only that, he is a heck of nice guy. He always takes a sincere interest when he meets a new face, being naturally inquisitive about what you have to say and very thoughtful when he gives a response. If ever there was an “Ambassador of Steel Guitar” that would be one job that Russ would meet all the qualifications and much more. Russ also takes a scholarly interest in music and the steel guitar besides being able to play his fanny off. In other words, he a Guru of the steel guitar, but not a lofty Guru…a just plain down-to-earth approachable Guru ever so humble! |

Hey Steve, Russ in indeed a great player and a very nice person. A few years ago he was in Norfolk, Va. at the Wells Theater for the "Lost Highway" play about Hank Williams. He played the Don Helms part and even used an old Gibson D-8 standing up like Don did with Hank. Russ nailed the steel parts too a tee. While he was in the show my wife and I got to see his performance and was very happy with it. Russ came to the house while he was in town and we had a nice visit. He brought me a couple of sets of lap steel strings as I had an old National D-8 I was setting up in the Don Helms tuning(s).. Russ showed me the tunings and it was really appreciated. He's one of the good guys in the Steel Guitar World both personally and professionally.........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

I've seen Russ play many times and he always blows me away. Sometimes when he is playing a "Patsy" show, he will throw in some really wild jazz chords on C6th that will startle any steel players in the audience but fit so perfectly that the crowd doesn't realize what he's just done. Now that's talent.
One night we were privileged to hear Russ set in with several of Kansas City's top jazz guitarists and other jazz musicians at one of the established jazz clubs in town. His chord work on C6th left them all with a bad case of "Lock-Jaw" before the night was over. And, he can tell you the names of every one of those wild chords and the notes in them. He can also smoke any classical musician on theory when he wants to. He is a great guy and I'm proud to consider him one of my best friends. |

I am glad this is being kept at the top.Russ is the kind of person that is willing to help you if you ask. He truly is the ambassador of the steel guitar. Most here on the forum know about his playing. If you haven't heard him, you are missing out. |
