I need help. I have never replaced the original single coil pickups in a push pull. I like them stock, however, I have a playing job that requires humbuckers due to some kind of wiring issues in the building. I would like to hear of experiences with humbuckers in a push pull. I naturally would like to know which pickup has come closest to producing the single coil sound in a push pull guitar. Please help me with your findings.

Jerry,
I think the Tonealigners sound the closest to the factory single coil pickups.
You might also try the E-66 pickups. George L. and Buddy Emmons designed them to get the early push/pull sound. They twang real good but some think they're too bright. Maybe it's because early push/pulls are too bright!
I once owned Harold Fogel's '69 and he had put E-66's in it. They sounded surprisingly close to a '65 Emmons I also owned at the time.
So I guess it really depends on the single coil sound you're going after.
To me, fidelity-wise, the Tonealigners sound just like the early 70's (17k) Emmons pickups.
Whatever humbucking you decide on, you're gonna love being totally free from buzz and still having that clear and full sustaining sound that the push/pulls are famous for. Another plus for the Tonealigners is that they also have adjustable polepieces. Good luck. |

You will get a whole host of suggestions. I can tell you that the Lawrence 705 pickup in a push-pull is pretty impressive. No humbucker is going to give you the single coil growl, but the 705's are very clean and clear in a P/P (and of course noise free!).
Just ask Bobbe Seymour. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Telonics TCA-500, Webb 614-E, |

Thanks guys. I have a pair of Tonealigners, some original 705's, and some 710's. Just not sure which ones to put in the guitar. The 710 is my favorite humbucker in my LeGrande guitars.

Mike, my TTs are usually nearly noiseless, but occasionally in some rooms will go intensely hummy at rest. The Zum has an E66 on the back neck, so I just hush the front neck between songs in those rooms.
But if he's got a standing gig on a buzzy stage, I'd ditch the single coil too |

Lane, you got it. It is a weekly show and the hum is terrible with a single coil but absolutely quiet with a humbucker. At this point I still don't know which to try. I am leaning toward the chrome edged 705's. However, I had a BMI with Tonealigners and it sounded very good to me. I am arguing with myself!

Jerry, go with the 705's. They are a bit hotter than the s/c's and pick up a bit more picking noise if you have a tendency to pick hard like I do. But I've tried a set in a PP and SKH with great results!!! All of the tone of the s/c's without the hum...

Have you tried moving/reorienting your guitar? RF, even down at 60, behaves weird. One place I played at, I went from atrocious to reasonable just by turning the guitar about 15° |

I settled on 710's in the 81 push pull and it was a very good choice. I played the guitar Friday night and was very happy with it. I played it again this morning in a Church service and again it sounded very good to me. I never thought I would think so but I believe the guitar sounds as good with the 710's as it did with the single coils. It still sounds like an Emmons push pull. Thanks to all who responded.

I had a double coil Pentad I was going to put on mine, but I would have to pull the neck on E9 to install it. |
