I've got a GFI student model that I just love. Would like to explore the world of 8-string, non-pedal C6.
Anyone have any recommendations / experience with an inexpensive console instrument that's decent quality? Say less than $400-$500?
Thanks!

I got a National D-8 that I can sell ya for $750, but that's about as cheap as they go unless you build one yourself. _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |

That's a "lap" steel, the gentleman is looking for a "console" steel (has legs). |

Thanks, Folks. All suggestions welcome. A National D8 sounds really cool but beyond my budget.
WIll look into the Allen-Melbert, Paul.
Suppose I oughta consider non-consoles as well to increase my options. I see that there are some stands that can be used with them. |

I've watched a few D-8 Magnatone Lyrics go by at around that price range. I don't know anything about them other than they look really sleek and seem to have been built as professional-level instruments. Perhaps someone else has some real experience with one and could comment further. |

The definition of what constitutes a "console" steel has always been a little fuzzy, but I was under the impression that a "console" steel was a non-pedal guitar with legs and has at least two necks.
It sounds like Eric is mainly concerned with getting an eight string guitar so that he can explore eight string C6th. _________________ Mark |

Hi Eric,
I was also looking for awhile for an 8 string, keep your eyes open here on the forum, I ended up getting a magnatone lyric D8 console for about the price of a new single 8 lapsteel. Just played it at a jam session and it sounds great (thanks Jack!).
Good Luck,

Thanks for that great offer on the Guyatone, Howard. I'm going to pass for now, but I sincerely appreciate you posting that.
Played a National briefly yesterday at a shop. It needed a couple things and seemed a bit high (or am I being cheap?) at $800.
Now having notions about trying to build one this winter as a project. Made a tele last year and had a lot of fun in the process. Found some Stringmaster dimensions here on the forum and am thinking it seems doable.
In the meantime I'll keep my eyes open for deals as they pop up. Thanks to all for your helpful suggestions. What a great place this forum is. |

I don't think you could build a D-8 for what Howard is willing to sell that Guyatone for. |

the cheapest and smartest step would be to put an 8 string c6 set of strings on your gfi, leave the pedals off and see if this is really the way you want to go before investing in a whole new steel. (no-brainer) |

That's a good idea, Chris. Had thought of that but I use my pedal steel enough that I didn't want to mess with changing strings around, etc.
After re-watching those great Bobbe Seymour and Mike Neer lap steel vids on YouTube last night I snapped.
Ordered a Morrell 8-string for $180 (a finish factory 2nd) to get me started. Figured it'd be a good way to explore and won't break the bank.
I'll just attach it to a sawhorse with some drywall screws and, bingo, console! |
