Does anyone know what amp and speaker Bill Frisell is using on the new CD "All We Are Saying..."? Gorgeous soft crunch tone there! Very Happy

I'm going to guess that it is a Princeton Reverb.

You might be right. It does sound like 6V6 tube saturation.

I've seen Bill a number of times and he's almost always using two or three amps, and he often uses an acoustic amp (yes, with a tele). He played a show in my town last week with his tele going into one acoustic amp tower thing with two six inch speakers. I've seen him with a couple of custom fender type amps, an old Gibson or silvertone amp, and lots of fenders (Princeton, deluxe, blues jr).

b0b, a google for 'bill frisell gear' turns up 84K hits, including interviews with the man himself. HTH.

I saw him live in March. He was using two Deluxes, probably rental reissues...

Is that a Bassman? Looks like it has too many knobs for a Bassman.

Good video.

It's a blackface bandmaster. You can see it at 3:43.

He is also known to use an overdrive pedal for the grittier tones. Don't recall which one.

To be geeky, that's a pretty Williams 12 at 9:20, 9:50 etc. Black bar... I don't like the producer's hairdo.

He uses a rat distortion pedal a lot I think.

I spoke with Bill recently about intonation and playing in tune. When I asked him if he feels like he's in tune while he's playing his response was, "god no!".

Whenever I see Bill playing here in town he's usually using an Anderson amp. Handmade amps by Jack Anderson. Check it out here...

Happy to say I have a couple of them and they're great amps. Jack is a good guy to work with if you want custom options.

Is this what a Rat sounds like?

http://soundhost.net/b0b/MotherFrisellTone.mp3

The track "Mother" is an extended jam with just the trio - guitar, bass and drums. Is this just an overdriven Fender amp, or is it an effects pedal?

I don't think that's a Rat on that cut, sounds a little more organic to me than a Rat. I owned one of the first batch of Rat's from around 1980. It was a good pedal, but I've owned better.

Looks like a Tube Screamer next to his Line 6 DL4 on the floor in the above video. Sounds like one as well. Love the fiddle on Revolution. Unexpectedly appropriate.

I love when songwriters who don't know how to read/write music provide material for musicians who do. Smile
