I am looking to get my first pedal steel. SAw this on local Craigslist:

Used BMI pedal steel guitar. E-9 tuning has 3 standard 3 pedals and 2 knee levers. Guitar is in great shape and sounds fantastic. Comes with original hard case as well as seat with storage inside. I'll throw in a volume pedal too for the right price.

It is an S10 as far as I can tell from the pics and the price is listed at $1000

Any ideas if this is something to consider? Thanks for any input.

Steve

Stephen, this is just my opinion, but if you have limited funds, for just a little over the $1000. asking price of the BMI, you can get a NEW Stage One from Doug Earnst in Branson, Very good and dependable guitars. L.

While the Stage One is a very nice student model guitar, it does have less expensive pull-release changer and is, IMHO, not the guitar that the BMI is- with an all-pull changer and the BMI is quite a bit more versatile and easy to work on.

is it true that you can't change the position of knee lever changes on the stage one?

On those that I've had at the shop the bellcranks are welded to the cross shafts.

Then again you would have to add the cost of adding two more knee levers and a tuneup.

Knees going left have to raise. Knees going right have to lower. I believe it's a cost issue, although it could be the limited changer.

Thanks for the input to all of you. I think I will pass on this and keep looking as I am not mechanically inclined and really want a steel that will require just routine maintenance. Also I have generally found its better not to get entry level instruments. So any other recommendations are welcome and my budget has some flexibility.

There's a Dekley S-10 with 3 pedals and four levers on Ebay right now with a buy-it-now price of $1000. Fully professional instrument. Built like a tank, easy to maintain and make changes on, great sounding pedal steel.
