I have been watching this video and can't tell if you are hitting the harmonics with your fingertip or knuckle. Which one is it?

Posted 12 Nov 2011 3:55 pm Good question...............
|
|
Thanks for taking the time to watch that olde video and for having the curiosity to note what was going on and for taking the time to inquire about it. It's always fun to discover that 'someone' is actually watching one's videos.
I was playing a simple right hand, palm harmonic. I was plucking the individual strings with my thumb pick while barely touching the plucked string with the outside heel of my right hand.
What'd you think of how I slid into that 3-part harmony with the two other musicians? It was always fun to be able to play those somewhat complex arrangements. PLEASE NOTE: No tabs or sheet music was prepared. We went thro' it just once at practice and they all liked it so we did it again using the exact arrangement that's on the video. It didn't come out too bad......... |

Yes Alex, I still have the quad Bigsby (32 strings) with six pedals. I took it clear to the Texas Show a few years back but there was no significant interest in its presence.....so it sat alone in the corner of the non-pedal room, hidden from view by a bunch of Fenders and Gibsons, etc.
It weighs 105 lbs in the case......
Many thanks to both of you for your kind words. This olde man surely appreciates it. |

No interest for a Bigsby?!?! That's astonishing. Ok, gotta log off and go work on my harmonics now. Thanks for the inspiration Ray. |

Nobody was interested in a four-neck Bigsby??? That's bizarre! |

Hello from Mr.Boards
We are looking for the Non-Pedal Session 2009 photos, in the mean while - here are a few to get the drool running.
Don't forget there were several GeorgeBoards - Cliensmiths - Supros - Magnatones hiding the Rare Pristine Quad Bigsby too.

Alex, Bob; as George said there were several great looking guitars hiding the Bigsby, but I think that was the year Skip got his new nickname "Lights Out". Thanks, to Gerald Ross having a battery back up Micro-cube amp and Ivan borrowing a Carroll Benoit great sounding Resonator, the show went on for an hour or so in the dark until the power was finally restored in area. Even with another one or two visual distractions Ray went on doing a great job bringing back some great memories of his career playing music. BTW, Ray, someday I still hope to hear that complete interview. It was too bad we didn't get to hear more of the Bigsby. _________________ "Keepin' the steelin' going strong"

A great video. Ray, you should record more. All that talent should be shared. I, for one, would buy any CD that you produced, and I know many others would.
Jerry wasn't the only master of touch and tone.
I wish I lived closer to you, then I could help with the production. |

Little did we know when many of us in the 50's started buying the four necked Steel Guitars with up to 9 pedals (mine was A Wright) that they would soon fade into obsolesnence. When the Nashville E9th tuning came into being with the addition of knee levers, a two neck was most that would ever be needed. Where us old timers spent years developing the the use of our hands and minds, now we had to start training our legs, feet, and knees if we wanted to compete in the new Steel World.
However, when I played some of the new Pedal Steel Guitar u-tubes, I am about the only one listening to them in my house. One day someone posted and old Noel Boggs record of "Tenderly". When I played it
everyone in the house came in and said "what are you playing, it's beautiful". |

Sheesh, can you tell Ray's a proud papa of his Bigsby? Few have sweats with their guitar splashed all over. I want one! Since I'll never get a Bigsby now...
My VoluTone is exactly like Ray's oldie.
What a nervous venture it must have been to haul two rare pieces like that thousands of miles! |

Thanks to my good, good friend P.J and Mr. George Boards for the posting the photo's of the BIGSBY.
Thanks too, to the rest of you for your kind words...
and for Jeff Strouse for ably setting up my BIGSBY while there in Texas. He's a real mechanic and a dear friend.
Thanx too, to Alan for your kind words regarding my playing and CD's. You are indeed a kind friend.
And Ron, Sally would likely whip up a sweat for you with a pix of your favorite g'tar or Volu-Tone amp on the front of it. Is your amp also operational?
We two, just might have the only operating units of this model in the world. One never knows. |

Ray, mine's 100% fried, in need of a serious Dan Healy-ization. If I wasn't expecting this odd rarity to be knocking on my door tomorrow http://www.ebay.com/itm/160673304791?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 and could get a Peavey Classic 30 (thanx Wayne Tanner...!) off of my wish list, I'd be shipping it off to Cali already, it's WAY overdue. So you might be America's only user of this year issue, at present. |
