Greetings everyone, first post, nice to meet everyone! I'm Jake, I live in Tallahassee, FL. I don't own a steel (yet) but I joined here to learn everything I can about them before I finally bite the bullet on one!

The topic title "Stealin' from the Steel" is an old instructional video that someone told me about, that google has drawn a total blank on. It basically demonstrates how to play certain steel licks on a guitar. Has anyone heard of it? I'd really like to get my hands on a copy of it, physical or digital.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, seemed appropriate!

Thanks in advance!

Jake

Our friend and forumite Kevin Ryan and his guitar playing buddy Mike Sherman put that out quite awhile ago. Kevin is also the man who produced the Jay Dee Maness instructional videos.

Don't know if Kevin still has any copies left, but here's his websites anyway.

Just beware!!! Some of us return the favor. U have a pocket full of Pete Anderson licks, and I have a couple Jimmy McGriff CDs and a Sonny Stitt CD bought just for lick looting ..
If anyone has an instructional video of B3 or sax licks, let me know

Jake...there is a bunch of stuff on YouTube of course:

Lane... just cop the head to "Back at the Chicken Shack" to get a handle on the cool B3 cliches. Cool

Regarding the "Stealing from the...etc etc concept"..., For years, Kevin Ryan has been trying to talk me into doing a video of my midi guitar (6 string) ideas for copping the styles of other instruments. I never thought that there would be much call for showing guitarists Floyd Cramer or Jimmy Smith licks. Maybe I was wrong? Rolling Eyes Embarassed

Thanks, Rick, I've watched almost all of those videos, and picked up some real killer tricks from 'em!

I was just super interested in this particular one, because it was recommended to me by a local legend who sort of took me under his wing. He already let me watch all of his old Arlen Roth Hot Licks tapes... Very Happy

I'll be in contact with Kevin, hopefully he has one layin' around, or knows where I can pick on up...

You're welcome Jake!

Hey I'd be remiss if I didn't act on my sworn duty as a Steel Forum member to highly encourage you to consider actually taking up the Pedal Steel Guitar someday...I promise it's WAY more fun than doing it on guitar!!! Smile

Rick, it's not just B3 licks, I like the way McGriff THINKS. Almost, but not quite, an Emmons-like sensibility (I also hear not similarity, but parallel, between Jimmy Smith and Chalker).

Believe me, a steel is in my near future. It's been a romantic dream of mine for a while. 99% chance I'll be buyin' it from one of the fine people on this site! Smile
