My friend Chuck from north Florida has one exactly like this. It is a sweet guitar in every respect.

Some years back, Jimmy Eaton and I went down to Jim Palenscar's shop to see Steel Guitar Heaven. It was my first visit. As luck would have it, Mark Guiles was there, and I asked him if he could make me a body that was all black with diamond inlay, but allow the wood grain to shine thru. Between Mark and Gary Carpenter, this is what I got.

Needless to say... I was, and still am, one happy guy.

It's safe to say that any builder of lacquer guitars can make you a black one.

Ed Fulawka made a black one a couple of years ago - sold it to the US...can't remember where. But it was sure an eye catcher!
I am working on two at the moment. One will be totally black; body, neck, fret board. The logo will be black in white outlines. Fret board will have white lines.
The front will be trimmed out in shiny aluminum strips.
It will get the usual 6 coats of instrument lacquer on top of the black stain.

In a recent visit with Jeff and Gloria Surratt at Show~Pro, I saw a Black Lacquer guitar being assembled, and it was mirror flawless. I think it may have been for forumite Jamie Lennon. I think Tommy White may have a blaclac guitar too...not sure tho.

I still have my black lacquer/ pearl inlaid RusLer. It was made in 1976. Unfortunately, it's got a few dings, but, it still looks great.

I had the opportunity sometime ago to see & hear a STEINWAY piano costing well over $250,000.00, the LACQUER finish on this piano, well awesome is not the word to discribe this finish. I could see my face on the surface of this piano, I could have shaved my face right there. I did not attempt to touch this piano or breath near it, what a beauty.

Thus far the Emmons, Jackson & the Rains that were posted all looks beautiful, (the Emmonas was my first choice) but comparing them to this Steinway, well I guess at $250,000.00 you do get the awesome state of the art LACQUER finish.
Wish I had a photo of this Steinway to post.

What's a Steinway, first push/pull steel every invented.

Anyway it's one of the top pianos in the world, the company is located in Long Island City-Queens, NY.

Take the #7 IRT subway train from Flushing Main Street to Queens Plaza transfer to the RR to Ditmars Blvd., upon arrival at Ditmars Blvd , go the exit stairway, walk 1/2 blocks east till you arrive at "Cosmos Greek Cafa & Flee Joint".

Ask Cosmos for a Cheese Burger, Cheese Burger, no coke only pepsi. He'll then will call his borther-in-law who owns a yellow cab, no makings just the word cab in Greek. George the Greek cab driver will take you to the STEINWAY PIANO CO. located at 1 Steinway Place, Long Island City, NY 11105.

Brings you picks & steel bar, make certain you ask for the Concert Piano Model D tune to E-9th, go have a blast.

Were the 1976 Fender Sho-Buds black lacquer, or was it black paint?
They made about 4000 of them, I believe.

Peter, it was likely "hide stain" that they used. Hide stain hides the grain underneath.
