I had to check again this morning to make sure this was actually going to happen, since there has been virtually no mention of it in any of the ads for the show on ABC.
In any event, I sure hope they do a better job of it than they did when they "honored" Carl Smith. Disgraceful. |

I hope they do. Cambell is a legend. Paid all his dues. Great musician/performer/actor. What a shame about his mediacl condition. |

Barry, I didn't see the deal on Carl Smith (I can probably find it on YouTube) but I'll take your word for it that it was done poorly.
All I can figure is that as big as Carl was, his greatest success was in the 50's with a lesser level of success in the 60's and then his careered tailed off. As such, a lot of viewers weren't around when he was at the top of his game and he is probably looked at as being more of an "historical" figure of importance. the "historical figure" part reminds me a little bit of how many people seem to feel the need to refer to Hank Williams as Hank Williams Sr., as if somehow there could be a possibility of confusion between he and Hank Jr.
Glen Campbell's greatest success, though still a bunch of years ago is not as far back and to people of a certain age and younger, he's more of a household name than Carl Smith.
In the clip below of Carl with Johnny Sibert performing Hey Joe, Roy Acuff refers to Johnny as the "guitar man," not the steel man, or pedal steel man. This looks to be from the mid to late 60's. I think it's telling that Roy and Carl just use the phrase "guitar man" and don't add the other words, because there was a time in country music as we know when the vast majority of the lead work was handled on the steel guitar and probably a lot more country music fans, even being non-players and lacking any technical knowledge of the instrument - just had a reasonably good idea of what it was about and even had their favorite "guitar men." it wasn't confused with being possibly an obscure form of keyboard that somewhat resembles a sewing machine.
Ah, the plight of the side man. I know that Chris Scruggs has spent time visiting with Johnny, and I don't recall off the top of my head from his posts reading about the nature of the man - but after Carl Smith passed away I read an article in a magazine about how he had a fine life in retirement: a horse farm of several hundred acres outside of Franklin, and considerable money made from investments in music publishing and real estate.
The "guitar man" ended up as a security guard at The Tennessean newspaper.

An excerpt from his obit on CMT.com:
"Smith was so long out of the spotlight -- enjoying what was for most stars of his generation an early, atypical and genteel retirement -- many began to wonder if younger CMA electors would ever induct him into the Country Music Hall of Fame. When they finally did in 2003, Smith's few seconds back on national TV consisted of a silent smile and wave to his well-deserved standing ovation."

Well back to Glen - "cease and desist" order on the thread-jack! I must be losing it anyway - the Carl Smith portion of this thread got me thinking about Johnny Sibert, on which there are a couple threads running right now, and I just "morphed" into that neighborhood.
I'll program the DVR when I get home, and I'm reasonably confident that they'll get this one right for Mr. Campbell. _________________ Mark |

The plight of the sideman is an all-too-familiar theme to most of us here on the Forum.
I actually hijacked the thread myself by including Carl Smith as a recipient of the shoddy treatment the CMA has bestowed upon some in the recent past. It seemed relevant here. No need to apologize, Mark.

The tribute was a nice thing to do for Glen. He seemed to be really enjoying it. Glad they did it while he can still appreciate it.
He gave Brad thumbs up on Galveston. Keith also did a nice job on Lineman. And Vince Gill...what an emotional delivery of Phoenix.....man what a voice. I miss hearing him so much on radio. Maybe they'll play some stuff off his new CD shortly.
God Bless Glen Campbell. Thanks for the heads-up Barry.
JIC you don't know, Glen has a new CD Ghost on the Canvass. Features some fabulous musicians like Brian Setzer, Chris Isaak, Rick Nielsen, Billy Corgan et al. |

Jerry, it was a nice gesture, but that was about as far as it went. Three guys sang three of his hits, then they brought him up on stage, hung a guitar on him, he strummed it a few times, and they cut to an Oil of Olay commercial. When they returned from the commercial break, Glen was gone. Did he play for the live audience while we got fed commercials? Guess we'll never know. My head is still spinning ... |

Yeah, I was interested to see if he played, but it seemed to me that stage appearance was pre-planned and that they never intended for him to perform for the tv show, but I'm just guessing here.
Anyway, I still think it was nice. |

Here's the link to the segment, I thought it was good, nice that Jimmy Webb was there.
I watched the show for two hrs. last night wanting to see the tribute but got fed up with the rock concert with all the trashy production, and turned it off.
Vince G. was great, he can sing any song, I saw him at the Brian Wilson tribute at Radio City years ago and have the DVD, and he sang 'Warmth of the Sun' just as well as he did 'By the Time I get to Phoenix'.
Maybe some of the Rock stars in the audience can learn from what Jimmy Webb and Glen accomplished. _________________ Regards, Craig

Why didn't Glenn get up and do HIS songs/hits, to begin with?
Just an intro from the guys that DID his songs/hits, would have sufficed.
As good as those guys are, Glenn would have been my more preferred performer of Glenn Campbell songs; especially, because he's still alive. _________________ Chip

I would tend to agree with you Chip, provided his medical condition would allow him to do that. However, the trend toward tributes of late is that other prominent stars are asked to do the awarded artist's music while they sit and enjoy. |

Jerry,
True. I'm well aware of Glenn's medical problems.
OK. I guess that says it all.
I'm always hoping for the best. Especially for the artist.
I'm getting up there myself.
I'm still a dreamer and a wisher, tho.
...just didn't sit right with me. _________________ Chip

Chip, I feel your pain. A recent tribute show to George Strait had all these other singers doing George's songs. I remarked to someone else at the time that I'd just as soon they did a sort of roast with those guys, let them throw flowers then let Old George do his own stuff.
I guess that's the way things are today. Maybe in the future. We can hope, at least. |

Well, you can't have it both ways; complaining about how awful it is that Chuck Berry is stuck up there on the stage just to exploit him, and he's too gaaked to know it. Glen Campbell had set an extremely high standard of playing and singing for himself all throughout a long career, and perhaps he didn't want to tarnish that. That last album of Johnny Cash's wasn't something that I wanted to hear twice. It takes self-awareness & bravery to retire before you fade away too far. |

What i'm thinking is that the network was afraid if Glen got up and started to sing and play he may go off in left field and embarrass himself and the network . Glen had a long ride in great music thats for sure . My opinion for what thats worth ! |

Not saying it couldn't happen, but he's in the middle of his farewell tour right now and I haven't heard of anything going awry, so I don't think that was their logic. I think they're a bunch of bean counters with no musical acumen who would rather devote ten minutes to something like that B.S. opening number than give Glen the sendoff he deserves before his lights go out. |

Barry the reason i said what i did was i read a serious article about Glen . This was from someone that knows the facts . They said that Glen would start singing a song and forget the words . He would be playing guitar and forget where was . This is sad because Glen was one of the greatest guitar players for a long time ! I would like to think all this was totally inaccurate and hope it is . G.P. |

I saw [I'm sure a lot of you did to]an interview with Glenn a good while back on RFD with Ralph E.I knew what was happening then, He had trouble with questions he was asked about his child hood and early career, He sang several of his big hits, but would forget the keys. So sad,my heart went out to him. IMO,one of the GREATS in my lifetime. Saw his wife on a talk show, she said on this last tour he would use a teleprompter to help him remember lyrics so people would'nt think he was drunk or high on something.
