Thanks for sharing this,I've never seen the photo's before and some outtakes are new to me.
I've been a Gram Parsons fan for almost 30 years and Neil is also a friend for almost 30 years.
I passed the link to him,I saw Neil in Austin this spring,I love his stories. Thanks again! |

 80s big hair had nothing on us in the 60s/70s!
The change in the mid 60s from crew cuts and flat tops to HIPPIES! now seems like it was almost overnight. |

Thanks for this. Apart from the different setting, there are also many songs that are not on the posthumously released live album.

I have a CD that I transferred from a cassette of a show of Gram & the fallen angels with the same personnel except maybe for Barry Tashien. The quality is very good except Neal's steel could have been a little louder, except for that, the mix is pretty good. I think it was a show that some radio station sponsored as the DJ announced it.....JH in Va.

John, I've been listening to the shows at work thinking how wonderful it would have been to be in that audience. Just about perfect, rough edges and all. Highlights for me are Streets of Baltimore, Drugstore Truck Driving Man, My Uncle, Song For You...
How cool that you made every night! Any memories stand out?
I hope Neil gets to hear these tapes, they won't be everyone's cup of tea but for fans they are pretty special. |

It was pretty incredible. I had been playing for a year or so, and was stoked to hear and hang with Neil. Most of the guys in my first band were fans, so we did not book any shows that week. Neil was great and I have been friends with both he and Jock for years. There was a lot of drinking going on for sure... Of course, did I get any pictures? Of course not....
Oh, it was all pretty heady for a young guy back then...what stood out? Well, Emmy Lou, of course...

Thanks for posting this. I love Neil Flanz's sound and style with Gram Parsons. It's some of the best pedal steel that was ever played, in my opinion.
Also got to see Emmy in Central Park this summer when she played with and before Levon Helm. Emmylou still sounds as sweet and angelic as she ever did, and she still loves Gram as if he were still here. She's always a breath of fresh air. |

I have a CD that Neil co-produced and played steel on here in Florida called "Still Safe At Home".
If you can get a copy of this Neil CD you will hear the full extent of this man's ability.
He does some Parsons as well as some Jagger tunes.
Wild Horses has some of the most haunting steel you'll ever here.
It was nice to meet Neil as I have been a fan of his since hearing him on my old Gram Parsons LPs.

Neil is one of those steel players who can just melt everything together so well. His skills are evident on the Gram Parsons & Fallen Angels live album from 1973 in Hempstead, NY.

Neil plays with Amanda Cevallos in Austin nowadays,she happens to have a great taste of song searching next to her owns songs.
This means Neil plays a lot of Gram Parsons,Merle Haggard,Buck Owens and Hank Wiiliams songs....which he does fantastic!! |

Friday night @ Rusty's in Austin and Saturday afternoon at Torre Di Pietra winery in Fredericksburg. These recordings came out really great.
I love how raw these are + being recorded live.
You can hear the audience & they all sound very good.The lead player & Neil really stand out.
And Emmy & Gram's singing - what more can you say!

The book is from the early seventies, he changed a bit compared to the coverpicture, but so did I.
It is funny to talk to a fellow Dutchman on this forum,
but it really underlines the importance of this international forum.
BTW how on earth could you find anything on steelguitar in Amsterdam ?
