Anyone in Forumland replaced the stock 15 inch speaker in their Nashville 400 with a 12 inch speaker?
If so,what speaker did you use and what were the results as far as tone? |

some years ago i owned a nashville 400 and also a peavey LA400, which is the 400 same series, but with a black widow 1201, i connected the 12" bw to the nashville 400, i found while it would naturally lose some of the bottom end, it more than made up for in sweetness and responsiveness, i much prefer a 12" to a 15" speaker, i have always found the 15" a little sluggish in comparison, im sure others may disagree, just my view

| I know that my friend Wayne Dahl is using a N400 with a black widow 1203-4 speaker and he likes it. The problem is the baffle is fixed in the N400 so you would have to have a new cabinet made for it. I'm thinking that will be one of my winter projects to build a cabinet to try that combination. |

Steve....I know about Wayne's amp....it's pictured on the home page of Rick Johnson's website.Rick built the cabinet but didn't know what speaker Wayne put in it.
Do you know the power rating of the 1203-4 Black Widow? |

The 1203-4 is rated 350 watts, same as the 1501-4 according to Peavey.
The 1203-4 is a paper cone like the 1501 and was used in the discontinued Nashville 112 speaker enclosures (what Jeff Newman used). |

It seems to me that would be a step backwards, the amp has a baffle and room for a 15" driver, you don't save any weight at all but you lose a bunch of radiating surface. The low end goes away and the high end doesn't really improve, why would you want to do that?
If it's improved high-end response and clarity you want just get replace the BW with a JBL E130 and you're home... |

Guys,
All that you have to do is put the NV-400 amp in a bandit 65 cab. It fits perfect, and beleive me that compo sounds good in my opinion.

| You can get a 15" to 12" wood reducing ring from Mojotone. Great sounding amp with a 12" speaker. 12" speakers are more defined in the mids. 12" speakers are Paul Franklin's choice for live as well as studio work. Mike Johnson also uses them for the studio. Tommy Dodd, Wayne Dahl, Tommy Butler (now plays a Fox amp)and several others I know have done this and were well pleased with the results. |

| The 400 chassis should readily adapt to a Nashville 112 cab as well. I am currently using a Nashville 400 cover on my 112 and after a slight alteration to the length, it is a perfect fit. |

I was speaking in regards to the needs of a high-power single-driver stage amp, Ken, which I consider the NV400 to be.
I agree that using 12" drivers in the studio or close-mic'ed with a well-tended sound system can be a wonderful thing, and a PAIR of K120's will do quite nicely on stage.
I suppose if one wanted that sound delivered at lower SPL before distortion an 8-ohm 12" driver would do the job, but IMHO there are other, really good amps made just for that without compromising a classic high-power stage combo... |

I have one of those 15" to 12" reduction rings that Ken speaks of.
I got mine from Jamac, and it did not have any mounting holes drilled in it yet, but did have that grey fuzzy material on it so it looks pretty good.
Once you get it set up for mounting on your own gear (size it up and drill 4 holes, in my case) it's a super handy thing to have around for trials of speaker/amp combo's.
For example, I made my '76 Vibrosonic into what is basically a Single-12 Twin Reverb with an 8ohm JBL K120.
Sounds great! Better than the D130F that was in there (which is sooo treble-ee). |

I made a new baffle board for a 1203-4 speaker and simply screwed it to the back of the present board. If I want to put the 15" speaker back I simply remove the 12" board. I didn't know about the reuction ring at the time.

That's what I originally wanted to do, Len.
I was in the shop on unrelated speaker repair biz, and saw the rings and the guy only wanted $5 per ring so I bought one just to try out.
He also had a bunch of pre-soldered ~12" speaker wires with female jacks, so I grabbed 4 sets of those, too. |

I contacted my closest Peavey dealer just today and ordered a new 1203-4 black widow. According to the dealer, they have plenty in stock. I am going to make my own ring this weekend. Good luck with what you decide to do. |

| I played my Nashville 400 last weekend with my new Peavey 1203-4 speaker installed in it. It is no lighter than the 1502-4 that came out of it, but, wow, the clarity and punch was amazing in it. The little bass that I missed out on was easily tweeked with the bass knob. This 12" is for sure a keeper in this amp. For mounting, I made a ring out of plywood that worked out perfect. |
