Question

Can anyone give a ball park value for a 1932 Magnatone double cyclops? Of course, individual value depends on condition. A high/low ballpark for excellent condition would be a useful benchmark. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about a dobro? Would it be a Montgomery Wards double cyclops, maybe? If that is the case, it depends. Most do not have much volume, but collectors like them. Square necks are more valuable. I'm gonna guess $1200 up to $2200. depending on features.

Tom, thanks for the info, that is exactly what I'm talking about. Round neck. What other features would one want to know?

Is it unbound neck and body? What is the plating on the cover plate? Does it have the sand-blasted (etched) finish?

Here's one:

Neck is bound, unbound body. I guess the plating is chrome, I'm not really sure. It's plain, not sand blasted or etched finish.

The wood on the Dobro model in the Buffalo Bros link is much nicer than on my Magno Tone. Mine looks like solid mahogaony (or walnut? is that possible?) but does not have nice figuring like the BuffBros dobro.

The cover plate design is also different than the BuffBros dobro. Where that one has rectangular cutouts, this one has coffin-shaped cutouts, six to a fan, four fans. Has the same half circle at the base of the fan as the BuffBros model.

The doube cyclops is between the end of the fingerboard and the top of the cover plate. Two small screens sit in a single housing, extending maybe a half inch past the side line of the fingerboard on each side.

The logo on the headstock is rasied, black background, gold lettering and designs, says MAGNO TONE. Serial no. btwn 2500 and 2550.

I have no idea what it's worth. More than I paid is doubtless. I'm trying to decide whether to sell it; I'm primarily a flat top / arch top country blues and jazz fingerpicker and I don't use this as much as it deserves, but it has a cool sound and I wouldn't give it up lightly. If I could get half way to an old 000-18 or a new/used 000-18GE, maybe I'd sell it.

Thanks for all info.

I went into Buff Brothers to get some strings yesterday and played their cyclops. Not bad at all. Not too loud. A good vintage dobro tone. You might want to consign yours at Elderly.
