Hello all. I am a harmonica player who bought this lap steel and know virtually nothing. The seller handed me what I now know as a magnet and the pickup cover plate (if that's what you call it). I do know that some came with one and a dummy and others with two magnets. Would you please tell me the stuff I need to know? i.e. replace the one magnet with two new ones- put these strings on it (I will be learning Blues only)-tune it to this- throw it away Shocked etc. He told me that I could put electric guitar strings on it from .11 to .48. Again, thanks for all help and advice.
Jim

Welcome, James. That's a Silvertone model 1311 made by Valco of Chicago (who also made National and Supro lap steels). It looks like you only have one of the two magnets that hold the top plate away from the bottom pickup part. Is that correct?

That is correct Brad. In my reading, I learned that maybe some of the cheaper ones came with one and a dummy of wood or aluminum. The better ones came with two and that they may lose their strength?

Yeah, you really need to have two magnets for best results. I know Rick Aiello used to sell such things, but I doubt he does any more.
Jason Lollar sells replacement pickups. You might contact him for suggested replacement parts.
