I finally got through the process of building out a couple of doubles. They turned out looking very cool and sounding really great. I have one that I'll offer for sale here:

It's my "Woody" model with simple oil varnish finish. It features 22.5" scale, Stringmaster-style string spacing, through-body string attachment, 2 Rio Grande single coil pickups (per neck) with full blend circuit, master tone, master volume, 2 blends, 2 on/off slider switches, 4 standard legs, carrying case w/leg bag.
This one is built of Pecan. It's a little on the heavy side, but it sounds fantastic. I've used ash and pecan for heavier-bodied guitars and I have to say that the pecan seems to add a little something to the tone - maybe a little extra punch in the mid range. It's tuned C6 (High G) and E13 (Leon).

Since this is basically a prototype, the retail pricing doesn't really come into play, and I figure I can entertain offers in the range of $1500, shipping negotiable.

Thanks for looking!

Up top, again ...

I may try to head over to the Austin Steel Guitar meet-up this afternoon and I'll haul this thing along if I do...It'll be a chance for at least some Austin steelers to give it a spin.

That's a beauty! John makes great guitars with attention to detail...I've seen them in person. This is a great deal for a great steel!

Sweet axe.

I like the Fender and national styling cues, while at the same time, it's very streamlined and not at all fussy looking. Good knob choice, too. If it sounds nearly as good as it looks, it's a winner.

Did you consider a translucent paint job? I could see it with a hot color and the wood grain peeking though....

I've done a number of singles in various colors and the batch-mate of this one was an alder body version in vintage-tele amber stain. The two that I've kept to play are a single in shell pink and a triple in 2-tone see-thru white/natural walnut. The style works well in lots of different looks.

Thanks for the comments, you guys...
