I am getting that screaching pop from a couple of my pots, mainly shift and bass knobs. I have heard the pots can be cleaned. Is there a particular method. I am asking cause I am a technician and dont want to spend money if I dont have to. Can someone give me some good proven methods. No shade tree stuff. Thanks
Dwight

If just operating the pots back and forth as suggested doesn't work, remove the chassis and spray pot cleaner into the pot then work it back and forth. That fixes 99% of the pot problems and if doesn't the pot will need to be replaced.
I'm an ex amp tech (I was the Ampeg factory repair tech in Nashville in early 70's). |

I don't know how to take that. Is it a snide remark, as several have commented to me about, or is it meant to be a joke?
The original poster asked for comments from someone who was a tech. I worked as an Amp Tech and am still do electronics work and get a lot of personal e-mails with problems from forum members that I usually resolve.
I've also worked as an electronics tech on a NASA tracking station. |

Jack, I think Elton was asking Dwight what his technical area was, not questioning your qualifications. _________________ Best regards,

I think it sounded a little a diss also Jack, but remember text has no emotion so I quickly gave him the benefit of the doubt. As for my background, I am an electronic technician at the post office(no going postal jokes please ). I have never worked on an amplifier before, so I wanted some professional opinions. I went to Radio shack and the the guy there gave me some stuff to do it with. It has alot of pressure so I had to really be careful. It is my shift knob that is making the noise and that pot is very different than the other pots.

Yep, I think it was a diss as well.
As for Jack's qualifications......I've known Jack and worked with and jammed with him for over 10 years.
He has extensive experience in repairing virtually
all brands of amplifiers and when he was working
in Nashville maintained amps and sound equipment for
several major Opry groups.
Jacks knowledge does not stop there. He can troubleshoot computer problems in both software and hardware. Also he is experienced in the operation
and repair of HF and Microwave radio and telemetering
equipment.
Jack taught electronics while in the Air Force.
I have met few people who have his depth and breadth
of electronic knowledge. |

Blake, Thanks for the post. I'll slip you the $20 I promised the next time we meet.
BTW, Blake is a retired Broadcast Engineer, was a consultant to NBC for the Atlanta Olympics and designed and maintained recording studios. |
