I sent it out to be rewound but sadly the cardboard bobbins crumbled and he's returning it to me. Is there a new pickup available that will fit nicely in the plate? This is the string thru the plate type with side mags. I'm fixing this lap up for someone and don't need something expensive as it will be used for a beginner's lessons.

Ron, I don't know how bad the bobbins are but I salvaged mine by using real thin super glue. (You can get it from hobby shops). It soaks right into the cardboard and stiffens it up.
I also had some success making my own bobbins using thick water color paper and super glue.
As far as replacements go. Jason lollar will sell the bobbins or just about any of the parts to fix them. Not exactly cheap, but he has a lot of work and time into this stuff. _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

Try and keep the original Supro pickup. Or at least get as close as possible. It is a big part of that sound. It is worth the trouble in my opinion. _________________ Bob |

You would think someone doing it for years would know little tricks to reinforce old bobbins.

You would think. Most guys who do pickups deal with the "usual suspects" ie: strat, tele, humbucker, etc.
The bobbins are just carboard so it may have been too far gone.
To get the steel in my avatar up and running I had to take the bobbins out of student model Supro that had bobbins in real good shape. _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

Jason Lollar makes a replica string-through pickup. It's not cheap, though - $250 - so you might check if Lollar would be able to rebuild yours for less; he's the master of pickup repairs. |
